Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Juneau AK 238 PM AKDT Mon Jul 19 2021 .SHORT TERM...Afternoon satellite imagery shows partly cloudy to mostly clear skies over a large portion of the central Panhandle as of this afternoon. Low level offshore flow has eroded marine layer cloudiness on the outer up to Cape Fairweather. Yakutat Bay is clearing out from the north as well so there is hope that Yakutat may see some sun later this afternoon before the marine layer moves back in. The overall trend, however is for increasing clouds from the south with the present area of mostly clear skies moving northwest towards Yakutat by tomorrow. The low southwest of Haida Gwaii is still out there, but its influence on the weather over the southern Panhandle is greatly diminished. Looking at IR and water vapor imagery, it does not seem as if it is contributing much at all to the easterly wave shower activity that continues to stream over the area. In fact, observations today have not reported any showers. That is expected to change tomorrow with showers becoming more likely through the day over the southern zones and those zones close to the coast mountains. Afternoon thunderstorms have developed across a large portion of the Yukon as of this writing, but those are forecast to remain in the Canadian side of the border north/west of Skagway and Haines. Likewise across the northern tier of British Columbia, where an enhanced easterly wave oriented east to west has persisted all day. The general motion of this feature is northwest, so those thunderstorms are forecast to remain clear of the Panhandle as well. The situation changes a bit for Tuesday afternoon and evening. By then, instability and other thunderstorm ingredients are forecast to result in some thunderstorms over the far northern inner channels, between Taku Inlet and Tracy Arm, and across Misty Fjords to near Ketchikan. Seasonal temperatures will prevail for this short term forecast period with daytime highs ranging from the lower to the upper 60s with 70 degrees possible for Skagway, Haines, and Juneau on Tuesday. Overnight lows will trend slightly above normal due to increasing cloudiness. .LONG TERM...Wednesday through Monday as of 10 PM Sunday. Forecast reasoning is generally the same as last night since not much has changed with the model guidance. Easterly wave activity leaves the central Alaskan Panhandle just before a front approaches the Panhandle, bringing more of a stratiform rain event into the Panhandle into the weekend. Generally, onshore flow from the ridge located over the far eastern Gulf and Panhandle will be present for into Thursday morning, yielding more showery type of activity until then. The ridge will sharpen over the Panhandle through Thursday morning before it gets pushed eastward out of the area. Additionally, unimpressive IVT values indicate no real threat of an atmospheric river with the front toward next weekend. As for winds, as the front approaches, they were marginally bumped up for the Thursday into Friday morning timeframe. Winds of up to 25 to 30 knots are possible just off the outer coast before it comes ashore. Through the rest of southeast Alaska, winds look to remain comparatively light at around 15 knots or less. Higher pressure will be poised around the southern Yukon Territory / northern British Columbia area for the majority of the period. Daytime high temperatures look remain on the mild side across the Panhandle through the long term forecast period, but cooler than the past several days, which were well into the 70s to near 80 degrees. High temperatures will primarily be in the 60s for the period. The warmest temperatures will be near the Skagway / Northern Lynn Canal area as they will have a bit less cloud cover with mainly broken to scattered skies, much less rain chances through the period, and a chance of some mild downslope winds from higher pressure positioned to the northeast. Skagway's highs look to remain close to 70 through the period. Generally, the farther south that you go through the Panhandle, clouds and precipitation chances are higher throughout the period either with the easterly wave activity for the first day of the period through the central Panhandle, lighter activity across the southern Panhandle associated with a weakening low coming ashore around the Graham Island, British Columbia area for the first day of the period, or the approaching low and associated front moving in from the Gulf, which will bring more persistent stratiform rain into the weekend. There is some minor disagreement compared with yesterday on the positioning and strength of the low and associated front as it approaches the Panhandle, but they were generally in good agreement.
