.SHORT TERM.../Through Sun/ A low meandering W of Haida Gwaii will
continue to be the main driver of the short range forecast as it
sends more frontal bands and easterly shortwaves into the southern
panhandle. Currently there are three bands of precip visible on
satellite imagery. The first extends from Berners Bay to Cross
Sound, the second extends across southern Admiralty Island to
northern Baranof Island, and number three is just starting to
enter the extreme southern panhandle. Each band is spreading some
light showers across the area. North of these bands, skies clear
out and offshore flow prevails. Haines, Skagway, and Yakutat have
all approached or exceeded 70 this afternoon due to the sunny
skies, downslope winds, or both.

Over the next two days the forecast is looking remarkably similar
to what is currently occurring. Southern panhandle will remain
damp with more frontal bands and easterly waves moving through
from that low W of Haida Gwaii. No significant rainfall is
expected from this system though. Some of that rainfall could make
it as far north as Juneau, and Gustavus Sat night into Sun (chance
pops are up for that area at that time). Northern panhandle
meanwhile will have clearer skies with offshore flow. Some of
these winds could reach 15 to 20 kt in Lynn Canal Later tonight
into early tomorrow. Highs will likely reach for or exceed 70
again at Yakutat, Skagway, and Haines on Sat. Juneau, Gustavus,
and Hoonah could join them as skies try to clear out though that
is not certain as if it stays cloudy temps could be cooler. Sun
afternoon is expected to be cooler overall with more extensive
cloud cover in the area.

Overall there were few changes to the forecast. Most focused on
the temperatures in the northern panhandle (mostly raising the
highs for Sat) and local wind effects.

.LONG TERM.../ Sunday through Friday as of 9 pm Wednesday / At
the onset of the forecast period, an upper level low will be in
place over Haida Gwaii and will be in the process of dissipating.
The result of this will be disorganized showers across much of
the panhandle early Sunday with decreasing chances over the course
of the day. The northeast Gulf coast looks to remain dry and
while the day there should start out with sun, increasing clouds
should keep the temperatures a bit cooler than the previous day.
Monday and Tuesday are more of a wash, rinse, repeat type of days
as more disturbances spin around the low. As of now, the inner
channels look like the most likely places for any additional
precip during these two days. As the low slowly dies out, areas
of the northern panhandle may begin to see some breaks in the
clouds. By Tuesday night, the low will have fizzled out completely
however flow will now be onshore which should promote more
widespread chances for showers. Toward the end of the forecast
period, a frontal system will begin to approach the region from
the west. Up to this point of the forecast period, rainfall
amounts do not appear to be of much consequence, but should expect
increased rainfall amounts with the front.
