A low will track eastward across the northern Pacific and
approach the Dixon Entrance area on Thursday. The low will 
begin to weaken and slowly shift southeastward on Friday.

Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM.../Through Friday/ The weather across the panhandle is
slowly improving as the trough that brought the wet weather this
morning heads off into Canada. Many places across the northern and
Central panhandle were IFR or lower conditions this morning but
have improved to MVFR or higher with the lowest ceilings still at
Yakutat and Haines with 1400 ft overcast (some breaks in the cloud
cover have developed over the central panhandle this afternoon).
Rain has also diminished with mainly Yakutat still holding on to
any precip. Winds mostly remain low with only Northern Lynn Canal
and Skagway reaching 20kt this afternoon.

Overall forecast changes were minor with the general idea from
this morning still intact. General forecast remains with a wet
southern panhandle while the north dries out due to the easterly
flow to the north of the SE gulf low. Two areas of uncertainly
with regards to what areas get wet. The first is between southern
Admiralty/northern Baranof up to Juneau, Gustavus, and Pelican in
regards to how far north the frontal precip will get. The highest
chances of rain in these areas is Thu afternoon into evening with
the initial frontal band that moves north. After that point
chances decrease as the main low drifts to the SE into Fri.

Uncertainty area number two is across the Haines and Skagway
areas from a trough that is dropping down from the north on Thu.
Some showers could spark along it Thu in the southern Yukon and
cross the border into the northern parts of the Haines and Skagway
zones. Thinking currently has most of the showers activity north
of the border with some chances sneaking into the White Pass or
Haines Customs area Thu afternoon. That activity dies off Thu
night into Fri.

.LONG TERM.../ Friday through Tuesday as of 9 pm Tuesday / The
large upper low that was over the Gulf of Alaska will move east
to near Haida Gwaii on Friday and then it stalls and drifts so the
SW while slowly weakening into Monday. The remains of this
feature will be forced into British Columbia and/or NW CONUS on
Tuesday. A weak ridge aloft from the northern gulf to the north
central Yukon Territory moves across the central gulf and into the
northern panhandle.

From the slow moving quasi-stationary vertically stacked feature
rain covers the southern to central panhandle as the troughs and
front rotate about the upper level and surface low. Think that the
rains may not reach the northern third of the panhandle and
Northeast Gulf Coast. After Sunday just slight chance to chance
level pops moving from Canada towards the panhandle. Rainfall
accumulations for the days from Friday to Monday should be under
half to 3/4 inch daily based on the model solutions.

Winds will continue to be unimpactful until the surface ridge
build in from the southwest. At that time, a southerly pressure
gradient over the far northern inner channels will generate 20 kt
winds over northern Lynn Canal Sunday evening and overnight.

Forecast confidence remains only average due to model differences
and some run-to-run inconsistencies.
