.SHORT TERM...A week low is moving northward over the east central
gulf and the associated moisture band is lifting inland across the
northeast gulf coast and panhandle. The front will sweep through
the rest of the panhandle and sort of stall along Portland Canal
or just past the border into British Columbia. Lingering showers
for much of the main panhandle because of the onshore flow behind
the front. The best chance of showers will be closer to the main
low so the central gulf coast east to perhaps Yakutat Bay. The
next more significant feature moves a low east toward Kodiak
Island Saturday and the frontal band with this low will arc out into
the central gulf, however, struggles against a surface ridge that
built up over the panhandle behind tonight's frontal band. This
slows down eastward progression of the front.

This is a change from thinking before, and also reduced some of
the expected rainfall, for the northern panhandle. The shift in
the models while close still has some differences so the rains for
late Sunday through Monday have a variations in how much rain is
incoming and to where it it might fall.

Some winds along coastal waters Sunday, although lighter winds
for the panhandle due to the ridge axis over the top of the
panhandle.

.LONG TERM.../Saturday through Tuesday/ As of 10pm Wednesday. The
extended forecast remains dominated by the first closed low
pressure system to move into the Gulf of Alaska in well over 2
weeks.

A fairly well stacked low pressure center will move southward
across the Alaska Peninsula and into the western gulf Saturday.
This low then lingers over the central gulf through most of next
week bringing categorical rain back to the region. POP was
elevated on Saturday, particularly for Yakutat, the spreads E-SE
through Sunday. Ketchikan/Hyder may take until Monday or Tuesday
for the rain to arrive. Models have come into better agreement
on the track of the low after it moves into the central gulf.
Thankfully they've honed in on the GFS solution which was favored
in the previous forecast. Some timing and QPF questions remain
regarding a wave that tracks northward along the front on Sunday.
This wave will arrive with the main front, likely at triple point
of a warm occlusion, and bring some moderate rates and wind speeds
of 25-35kt. Often waves like this cause the area of greatest
rainfall to shift E-W and even pull back off the panhandle.
Timing of that possible "lull" will have to be evaluated over the
next couple days.

On Monday, temperatures near the low center cool aloft, causing
precipitation to become more showery again. Think that as the low
lingers, frontal bands of showers will rotate about the gulf and
periodically pass over the panhandle. Timing of those frontal
bands often have lower confidence.
