.SHORT TERM.../Through Saturday night/...As the front over the
eastern Gulf continues progressing to the east, the ridge over the
far eastern Gulf and Panhandle is being displaced south as
initially expected. The net effect of this has been to disrupt the
marine layer and is creating partial clearing on the central outer
coast this afternoon. High resolution short range model data is
also indicating an area of significantly drier over the central
inner channels from Tenakee Springs south to Clarence Strait.
Satellite imagery this afternoon validates this depiction, with a
growing area of clear skies over Chatham Strait, Frederick Sound,
Stephens Passage, Clarence Strait, and the surrounding land areas.
Smaller holes in the cloud cover are also showing up near Juneau,
Icy Strait, and upper Glacier Bay. It is not often that the sky
forecast in Southeast Alaska become so challenging.

To the east, the upper low over British Columbia is making slow
progress further east, carrying with it the showers and
thunderstorms that have been an issue these past few days.
Regarding the approaching front, the parent low is well to the
west over Bristol Bay, occluded, and weakening fast. The trailing
edge of the front is highly defined on satellite imagery, but
much of its energy is being expended getting over/through the
ridge. The net result of this is that precipitation chances are
slight along the northeast Gulf coast, the outer coast of the
Panhandle, most of Chichagof Island, and the Icy Strait corridor
east to Hawk Inlet. Look for an increase in cloud cover tonight,
but post-frontal (tomorrow morning), expect decreasing clouds and
at least partly cloudy skies on Saturday for most locations
except the outer coast and northeast Gulf coast.

Small craft southerlies are expected this afternoon and early
evening over northern Lynn Canal and breezy conditions are already
in Skagway. Expect the same sort of conditions for Saturday
afternoon.

.LONG TERM.../ Sunday through Friday / The long term forecast
opens up with Sunday and it is looking dry with mostly sunny to
partly cloudy skies overall. That being said, along the coast,
partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies are possible due to lingering
marine layer clouds. Sunday’s temperatures will top out in the
60s to low 70s.

Have also included a chance for rain and thunderstorms near Hyder
during the heat of the day. With temps in the 70s and dew points
in the 50s, scattered to isolated pop up thunderstorms are
possible but most of the activity should be farther east in
Canada.

As we turn the page on the weekend and start the next work week,
the main question is - how long with the ridge of high pressure
hold off the next chance for rain? Still have the rain arriving on
Monday but have pushed the arrival time to Monday night for the
bulk of the panhandle.

Rain chances continue the rest of the week as an upper level low
moves southeast from central Alaska towards the panhandle.

High temps next week will be cooler than this upcoming weekend,
mostly in the 50s to 60s with lows in the 40s to 50s.
