.SHORT TERM...The short term forecast is a little more complicated
than it would seem at a glance. The main challenge has been to
define a line between the stratiform marine layer environment with
areas of drizzle and the more obvious convective environment with
a mix of clear skies and scattered shower activity. For instance,
the central and southern outer zones have been cloud free for most
of the day. The southern inner channels and Misty Fjords have
been covered by high clouds all day. Farther north and on the
outer coast, a low marine layer with areas of drizzle and very
light rain have persisted all day. The forecast situation does not
become much easier for tomorrow or tomorrow night either, with
the fine line between a stable airmass and marine layer at odds
with easterly wave shower activity encroaching from British
Columbia. The weather pictures becomes a little less complicated
Friday and Friday night as a weather front approaches from the
southwest and shoves the stable airmass currently over the eastern
Gulf to the east and displaces shower activity east and away from
Southeast Alaska. For more on that front, see the long range

.LONG TERM.../ Friday through Thursday / The long term forecast
brings rain back into the panhandle but for now, the best bet to
get wet is next week. That being said, some rain is possible on
Friday.
A front associated with a low near the Aleutian Islands is
projected to move over the gulf Thursday night into Friday. But
this front looks to weaken as it gets forced northward by a ridge
of high pressure already in place. The result is a chance of rain
for the northeast coast, near Yakutat, on Friday into early
Saturday. The rest of SE AK would stay dry.
The weekend might end up playing out quite nicely. There is good
agreement among the EURO, GFS, and Canadian models that this
weekend will have partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies. Decided to
go with partly cloudy skies for the inner channels for now and see
if the trend continues. Another aspect of this forecast is the
marine layer. How far inland will the low clouds move? That is a
question that will need to be answered over the coming days. The
overall pattern does lead to it staying in the forecast as the
ridge of high pressure doesn’t fully break down so have decided
to keep it along the coast through the weekend.
Good agreement among the EURO/GFS/Canadian ensembles that early
next week, the low near the Aleutian Islands mentioned earlier,
will move eastward and bring rain to SE AK. The timing of the
arrival of the rain is slightly different between the models
though. The Canadian is more aggressive in bringing the rain in
late Sunday while the GFS/EURO have it move in Monday. Either way,
early next week is looking rainy.
If this pattern plays out, temperatures would stay warm, 60s and
70s, through the weekend. Then as the clouds and rain move in,
highs would cool to the 50s and 60s.

.HYDROLOGY...The Chilkat and Stikine Rivers are both currently
slightly below minor flood stage and this is likely a result of
cooler weather and diminished snowmelt. The potential for rising
water remains, so flood advisories remain in place for both
rivers. The Taku River crested earlier today at a new record flood
level of around 45.5 feet, having surpassed the previous record
of 45.07 feet set in 2004. The river rose faster than expected,
surpassing moderate flood stage of 44 feet Tuesday evening. There
are some unanswered questions of exactly how high the waters
currently are and just how fast those waters are falling, so the
flood warning remains in place until 2 pm Sunday. Having said
that, it is possible that this warning will be cancelled prior to
that time once river gauge ambiguities have been resolved.
