Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...This short term forecast offers some relief from the
excessive heat that Southeast Alaska has been experiencing these
past few days. Highs for tomorrow and Thursday will range from the
mid to upper 60s. One exception will be Hyder where temps will
likely be in the mid 70s. Still that's a lot better than the 91F
reading from Monday. Other locations with noticeably cooler
daytime highs will be the outer coast north of Cape Decision.
There, a marine layer will limit highs to the middle or upper 50s.
Additionally, drizzle is expected along the outer coast tonight
and may penetrate as far inland as Gustavus and Tenakee Springs
overnight.

As is often the case with sunny skies inland and overcast
conditions on the outer coast, winds over Cross Sound are at small
craft intensity out of the northwest this evening. We assess that
small craft westerlies are occurring over the western half of Icy
Strait this afternoon and evening as well, since winds at Sister's
Island are close to small craft intensity.

The main story for this short term forecast continues to be
flooding along some of the larger rivers in Southeast Alaska.
Snowmelt from the excessive heat has resulted in high water on the
Chilkat, the Klehini, the Taiya, the Stikine, and the Taku Rivers.
Earlier today, we received a report that Lake Nolake near the
Tulsequah Glacier in British Columbia has released, resulting in a
glacially dammed lake outburst on the Taku River. And this come on
top of minor flooding on the Taku just from snowmelt. For
additional details, see the hydrology section of this discussion
below.

.LONG TERM.../ Thursday through Tuesday / A weak trough aloft
will be exiting the panhandle and moving into British Columbia
Thursday, and the few showers that remain associated with it will
be tapering off. A sharper ridge behind that trough and ahead of
the deep low near the eastern Aleutians. The low moves northeast
to be near Nunivak Island Saturday morning. A trough from the
eastern feature tries to into through the panhandle. The models
are depicting that this may happen Saturday, however, with
blocking ridge, models have a bias for trying to break them down
to soon. Have adjusted for that and stopped that trough off the
coast. A follow-on trough now in the zonal flow from South of the
Aleutians across the gulf should make land fall later Sunday or
Monday.

This zonal flow pattern will be the start of the shift in the
weather pattern, as a upper level low is moving to occupy the
northern gulf late Tuesday. Which will shift the feel of the
weather from summer to near fall, just on the warmer side.

Temperatures for much of the SE Alaska panhandle to be in the 60s
near 70, with Yakutat on the cooler side of that range. Could
possibly see some light rain Thursday and the trough moves
through the panhandle. Saturday for the Northeast gulf coast would
next earliest any rain is anticipated, and it is beginning to
look as if it may be not until Sunday or even Monday that
something gets to the forecast area.

One of the other big concerns especially over the gulf with a
nearly persistent surface high in place, will be the potential
for a marine layer to form and start moving about the gulf coast
areas. This will play havoc with temperatures, and sky for the
following week. Confidence is average for the extended time frame.

.HYDROLOGY...Observations from earlier today indicate that Lake
Nolake on the Tulsequah River has released. Eye witness accounts
stated that they have observed ice, foam and other debris flowing
downstream. With the Taku River already at minor flood stage due
to recent snowmelt from the abnormally hot weather, additional
water from Lake Nolake is forecast to cause the Taku River to rise
above the previous record level of 45 feet set back in June of
2004. Elsewhere, the Taiya River near Skagway continues to rise
and fall diurnally between bankfull and minor flood stage. A flood
watch remains in place for the Taiya. A flood advisory remains in
place for the Chilkat and Klehini Rivers near Haines through at
least Thursday morning. Finally, a flood advisory is also in
effect for the Stikine river near Wrangell, which is expected to
reach flood stage early Wednesday morning.
