Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...A ridge of high pressure over southeast Alaska will
survive and reform after a low travels eastward south of the
panhandle. The low undercutting will be suppressing the shower
activity in the northern portion of the panhandle tonight and the
southern Saturday. The rain may just catch the far southern
panhandle as it passes by.

Saturday should have a solid ridge over the eastern gulf impacting
the weather for SEAK. Temperatures Saturday will likely reach into
the upper 60s to lower 70s. Sites with the better sunshine will be
dealing with sea breeze effects during the day. The next system
moving through the western gulf towards the Kodiak Island, and
frontal will lift into eastern gulf and panhandle Sunday. The
models are still fine-tuning the track and frontal positions.

.LONG TERM.../Sunday through Friday night/...This extended range
forecast begins with a large upper ridge and ridge axis situated
directly over Southeast Alaska early Sunday morning. The ridge
will shift east early in the day as a result of a strong upper
level trough rotating around an upper low located over Kodiak. The
trough will be supported by an upper jet of 80 to 100 kts
(depending on the model). Models diverge early on as to where the
upper low will go as well as where the jet core will move to, but
all keep it somewhere between Yakutat and Cape Edgecumbe by Monday
morning.

The situation at the surface is still not stable in terms of how
the models are evolving the associated front, but it is clear that
all of the numerical solutions available are slowing the easterly
progress down A LOT. Current model depictions do not move
precipitation in over the outer coast until the early afternoon on
Sunday, meaning that Father's Day might turn out dry for most
locations until the afternoon. Sadly, there is still a lot of
uncertainty in the current forecast and poor model consistency and
agreement over the past few days only adds to a lack of forecast
confidence and exactly where and when frontal precipitation will
arrive and how far south that precipitation will extend. As of
Thursday evening, scattered showers remain in the forecast for
most of the Panhandle for Sunday. Another change from yesterday
is that both the ECMWF and the NAM are indicating that the rain,
when it arrives over the northeast Gulf Coast, will be heavy at
times. Much work was put into this aspect of the forecast by the
day shift on Thursday and those changes were retained this
evening.

Winds associated with this Sunday front are another change since
yesterday. Several iterations ago of the wind forecast for Sunday
featured small craft winds over the eastern Gulf west of Cape
Fairweather. Subsequent forecasts saw these winds diminished to
less than 25 kts. Today, all mid range models are once again
depicting small craft winds and at least one is now advertising
marginal gale force winds between Dry Bay and Cape Suckling. The
current forecast returns small craft winds to the marine forecast,
but there is not nearly enough confidence to extend them as far
south along the outer coast nor up the ante to gale force. The
potential is there, but this will wind up as a short term forecast
problem. The pressure gradient over the inner channels continues
to be very weak, so we still have no concerns about impactful
