High pressure will remain over the Panhandle through 
the weekend. A weak area of low pressure will move into the 
extreme southeastern Gulf and weaken before it reaches Graham 
Island, BC on Saturday. Another weakening area of low pressure 
moves into the western Gulf pushing a front towards the eastern 
Gulf and Panhandle on Sunday.

Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED

.SHORT TERM...A trough or weakening front over the southern
panhandle this afternoon. The moisture is moving north to the
northcentral panhandle tonight and into early Friday. Expect that
these showers will be tapering through Friday afternoon evening.

A low will be moving across the southern gulf later half of Friday
and through early Saturday it seems the various model solutions
push this system just south of the panhandle. For the northern
panhandle, there should be dry weather.

The front due on Sunday, seems to be slipping back more to the
west so, incoming rain will likely start a little later in the
day. Model solutions still with a touch of spread so landfall time
is spread out over 6 to 12 hours. Winds mainly under 20 kt for
the marine waters and over the land areas. Small craft winds
Sunday for the northeast gulf coast. Cross Sound may pick up
headed into Sunday, and Lynn Canal could increase to up to 20 kt
for Saturday afternoon due to thermal gradient differences.

.LONG TERM...This extended range forecast begins with an upper
level ridge building rapidly over the eastern Gulf and then
shifting east over Southeast Alaska. This will result in fair and
dry weather at the surface on Saturday. Unfortunately, the break
in the weather is not looking like it will last through the
weekend. Even as we are enjoying a fine Saturday, a low and
associated front will be entering the Gulf from the southwest.
This system will already be occluded by the time it arrives in
the Gulf, but a short wave underneath a 130kt jet core will re-
invigorate the front as it approaches the outer coast. Models
tonight are not in as good agreement on the timing of this front
reaching the outer coast. NAM brings precipitation into the
northeast Gulf coast very early Sunday morning. GFS is a little
slower, but extends the precipitation all the way down to the
Dixon entrance by mid morning. The Canadian and the ECMWF hold
precipitation off the outer coast until Sunday afternoon. With
such disagreement, the decision was made to not change the
existing forecast until model agreement improves. As it is, the
current forecast was weighted heavily in favor of the GFS from
yesterday (Tuesday evening) with rain likely by mid morning for
much of the Panhandle except the southern inner channels and Misty
Fjord. By late Monday night, conditions dry out again and Tuesday
may turn out to be the best (read driest) day of the upcoming
week.

Winds associated with the weekend front do not look like they will
be very impactful. Consistent with yesterday's thinking, the
occluded front will most likely be limited to small craft winds
west of Yakutat Bay with virtually no response from the inner
channels. This will bode well for the opening day of commercial
fishing on Sunday. After the Sunday front, winds will be non-
impactful even over the eastern Gulf until Tuesday. At that time,
a building ridge will result in northwest winds of 15 to 20 kts
along the outer coast, but still no meaningful response over the
inner channels.

Saturday will feature partly cloudy skies over large portions of
Southeast Alaska, but the remainder of the long range forecast
calls for mostly cloudy or overcast conditions. Still daytime
highs should be reaching or exceeding normal values for this time
of the year due to low level warm air advection from the south and
west.

Little in the way of changes were made to the long range forecast
for the reasons discussed above. Overall forecast confidence is
trending below average due to model differences and less agreement
than was being depicted yesterday.
