Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM.../Tonight through Thursday night/ Thicker clouds and
rain in the northern panhandle are moving westward this
afternoon. This area of moderate to heavy rain will continue to
move westward tonight. Any leftover showers will be more isolated
in nature as temps cool to the 40s. Winds should remain on the
lighter side at 15 kts or less.

A building surface ridge tomorrow should bring drier weather with
decreasing chances for rain. Thicker clouds are expected in the
morning with clouds decreasing throughout the day. Temperatures
should reach the upper 50s to low 60s but if clouds break up
quicker, warmer weather is possible. Winds will still be light,
mainly less than 15 kts.

Wednesday night into Thursday looks a little more active. First
off, Wednesday night, a front looks to swing up from the south.
But around the time it reaches Prince of Wales Island, it looks
like it will get sheared apart. So winds and rain would be
contained to the southern areas. Behind the front, an area of low
pressure looks to move north. This low would push rain northward,
along the panhandle Thursday night into Friday. Thursday’s highs
look warmer, mostly in the 60s. Winds are expected to calm down
throughout the day.

.LONG TERM.../Thursday through Monday/ As of 10PM Monday. The
extended forecast continues the pattern of weakening frontal
bands causing occasional showers over the region. Through the mid
range, each low pressure system that tracks into the south-
central gulf from the west weakens to a trough by the time they
move into our area.

Thursday continues to be a break for the north and possibly the
warmest day of the long term forecast. For the south, the next
frontal band looks to bring showers during the daytime Thursday.
Latest models now agree on the showers tracking more eastward and
staying south of Frederick Sound, and primarily over the far
south (Hydaburg-Metlakatla areas).

Some shower potential remains Friday and Saturday, but with a good
shot at sunny breaks too. The next more organized system looks to
arrive Sunday. Whether or not the front holds together by the
time it gets here is still uncertain since each day the models
seem to push it back a day or are weaker. Models agree on an
initial warm front, so have continued with stratiform rain Sunday
followed by a switch back to showers Monday. Since Sunday is
Father's Day and opening day for many fisheries, the marine
forecast will be monitored closely. If the front holds together,
then winds through the inside waters will be increased,
potentially to 20-25kts.
