Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM.../Tonight through Sunday night/ Easterly flow still
controls the upper level winds over the panhandle. And it looks
like that pattern will, more or less, stay the same through the
weekend.

So scattered to numerous showers are expected for the northern
parts of the area through Saturday night. South of the Icy Strait
corridor, chances for rain are pretty slim. Some isolated showers
are possible around Prince of Wales island Saturday afternoon but
otherwise, expecting dry conditions for most of the area. What
little precip chances are leftover over Sunday morning will
dwindle throughout the day as clouds decrease.

Weekend temperatures will be around or above normal for mid-June.
Highs in the 50s to mid 60s are expected Saturday with Sunday’s
highs warmer. Most the panhandle looks to reach the 60s with
upper 60s to near 70 degrees looking likely for the southern
areas.

Winds should stay on the lighter side through the short term
forecast period, less than 15 kts.

.LONG TERM.../Sunday through Friday as of 10PM Thursday/...It
looks like there will be the potential for continued propagation
of weak easterly wave activity over the forecast area through the
forecast period. This will cause more convective showery activity
to be the dominant form of precipitation and continued warm high
temperatures on average across the area as this activity looks
like it will be disorganized for the most part.

The warmest day will be Monday with highs in the 60s for nearly
all locations in southeast Alaska. This outcome is backed by warm
air advection moving into the area, which is indicated at 850mb in
the operational forecast models. Mild northeasterly downslope
offshore flow from Canada will work to keep temperatures elevated
as it looks to be just strong enough to keep the seabreezes in
many of the more populated areas at bay on Monday. An inverted
trough pushes its way up the Panhandle from the south on Monday.
After it moves past the area, the wind to shift to a southerly
direction starting on Monday evening throughout the rest of the
period as general ridging moves into the area.

The frontal system that looked like it was going to plow into the
area for next Wednesday as of yesterday looks like it will be
poised well to our south as of tonight and stay to our south.
Therefore, warmer daytime high temperatures, less organized, and
decreased precipitation coverage and lower QPF values are anticipated
over the area for Wednesday of next week. Even though the ground
is saturated from last week's rains across southeast Alaska, there
shouldn't be much concern for flooding next week due to this delta
in the forecast. We are in a more typical summertime pattern for
southeast Alaska.

A generally weak pressure gradient over the area should keep
winds at 15 knots or less throughout the Panhandle, the eastern
Gulf, and inner channel waters throughout the long term forecast
period generally giving good conditions for mariners.

.HYDROLOGY...The Salmon river near Hyder has been on the rise the
last couple of days, giving concern about early season glacial dam
release. But as of this afternoon, water levels begun to fall.
