Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...Easterly waves continues to dominate the weather
over Southeast Alaska. Clouds have been streaming over from
British Columbia keeping the central panhandle mostly cloudy. We
have seen some isolated to scattered showers earlier this morning
but have decreased in numbers through the day. Tonight, a
secondary E wave is expected to push through the central panhandle
bringing with it additional scattered showers. Friday, showers
will become more isolated and mainly focused along the coastal
mountains. Mostly cloudy skies are expected through the central
panhandle Friday with some clearing across the south and along the
NE Gulf Coast, including Yakutat.

Winds throughout the panhandle have remained on the lighter side
15 kts or less. With the increase in cloud cover, sea breezes have
been limited today and this will be the same story for Friday.
A surface ridge pivots into the Gulf Friday and along with it,
surface winds will increase between 15 to 20 kts along the outside
waters.

Surface observations across the panhandle show temperatures
currently in the mid to upper 50s. With continued cloud cover
Friday, similar conditions are expected with daily highs in the
mid to upper 60s and over night lows in the upper 40s to low 50s.
One exception, for areas that see the greatest breaks in cloud
cover Friday, increased warming will lead to highs in the high
60s.

.LONG TERM.../Saturday through next Thursday/ As of 10pm Wed.
The main threat of precipitation remains from Easterly Waves, or
convection/showers moving out of Canada. The panhandle will be
between 3 upper level lows over the weekend, making for a
confused/weak flow over the area. The main upper level and surface low
looks to park well to the south through Sunday and will
contribute to the easterly flow, some clouds and frontal bands for
the southern panhandle. Another low will track into the eastern
Yukon from the Canadian plains and enhance convection moving in
from B.C. and the Yukon. Yet another upper level low will move
into the NW gulf from the Bering Saturday night. This is a new
feature in the models and may cause some drizzle to fall out of
any marine layer clouds over the gulf.

The greatest potential for showers on Saturday remains
the northern inner channels and south to Juneau/Hoonah, but
cannot rule out isolated afternoon showers for the south either.

Sunday night the low to the south looks to send some frontal
bands over the southern panhandle, then spreading the chances of
showers over most of the region from south to north Monday and
Tuesday. Models differ on details, but all have the low weakening
to a trough and getting absorbed by the next larger low pressure
system moving into the western gulf mid week. Timing of this next
low pressure and assoc rainfall has been slowed down in models
until late Wed or Thurs.
