Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM.../ Wednesday through Friday / Low over the southern
panhandle sliding east. Isolated showers over the panhandle this
evening. Nearly the Haines Customs station, showers form Canada,
with Embedded Thunder could be approaching the border for a few
hours early in the evening. Marine cloud layer cover much of
the gulf waters and this will be pushing to the coast Wednesday
night over the northern portions and working south along the
coast. The southern inner channels may clear out somewhat
overnight, so have added in the potential for patch fog overnight.

High pressure builds over the Gulf of Alaska through Thursday and
into Friday. The ridge axis doing will near and moving Through the
panhandle Late Thursday and Friday. This will be increasing wind
through the inner channels on Friday. Lynn Canal winds increase to
30 kt at the moment and could even increase up to 35 kt in future
forecasts. Winds for the rest of the inner channels to 20 kt.

A weak band of showers will be spreading into the northeast gulf
coast area late Friday. A more widespread front will be moving
across the gulf starting late friday.

.LONG TERM.../Friday to Wednesday/...As of Tuesday evening. This
extended range forecast begins with a large, negatively tilted
upper trough that extends from Banks Island southwest across the
interior to the Kenai Peninsula. By this time, the trough will
have flattened out the upper ridge that was set up across the Gulf
and result in zonal flow across Southeast Alaska. The trough will
deepen slightly and move north through Saturday. To the west, an
approaching upper low will aide in building up the upper ridge
over Southeast Alaska once again, but this will be short lived, as
at least one upper level short wave will displace the ridge east
into Canada by Sunday evening. Another transient upper ridge will
build in Monday night into Tuesday.

At the surface, a mid level feature will arrive on the outer coast
by Friday morning. It is hard to call this feature a true front,
as there is no associated low or clearly defined frontal
structure. Still, models are in good agreement on rain, heavy at
times over the northeast Gulf Coast, from early Friday through
Saturday afternoon. At that time, a well defined front will be
approaching the outer coast. This event looks like it will deliver
heavy rain to the southern Panhandle, but that is a little too far
out into the future to say with any reasonable confidence. Any way
you look at it, though, it looks like the rule will be wet weather
from late this work week to mid week next week. What a fine way to
finish out May - a month that is supposed to be one our our more
dry months.

Winds in the extended range forecast represent the greatest change
in this long range forecast. Specifically, winds associated with
the quasi-front at the beginning of the period. There was a hint
of stronger winds yesterday, but today, the evidence is growing
that the eastern Gulf will see unseasonably strong marginal gale
force winds from Friday night to Saturday afternoon. Eastern Gulf
winds were also increased for the front from Saturday afternoon
through Sunday night as well, but not as much. There will be
responses over the inner channels as well, but nothing as strong
as over the coastal marine zones.

Forecast updates to winds from a blend of NAM and GFS. used GFS,
the Canadian, and some ECMWF for updates to PoP and QPF. No
changes to temps. Overall forecast confidence is average, but
trending higher.
