Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Juneau AK 247 PM AKDT Wed Apr 28 2021 .SHORT TERM.../Through Thursday night/...A front lies situated over the southern half of the Panhandle as of this afternoon and rain has been steady over the southern inner channels, the southern outer coast, and Misty Fjords all day. So far, the precipitation has been light, but that is expected to change by this evening. Although the rain will spread north through the night, the most widespread heavy precip is expected to remain south of Sumner Strait. Moving on to tomorrow, heavy rain is expected to spread north to the Icy Strait corridor. A warmer low level airmass is advecting in from the south with this front, and Thursday looks like it will be the warmest day through the end of this work week. Look for temps to reach the lower 50s in many locations. After Thursday, a cooler airmass will move in from the west. Even with tomorrow's relative warmth, higher elevations, such as the Juneau Ice Field, will remain at or below freezing, so P-type will be snow vice rain on top of existing snow. This will aide in preventing large scale snowmelt and attendant flooding concerns. To be certain, there will be rises on Panhandle waterways, particularly over the southern half, but there are no flooding concerns at this time. Winds associated with this weather system are not very impactful, with only marginal small craft conditions at times over the eastern Gulf, Clarence Strait, and Cross Sound through Thursday evening. By late Thursday night, conditions over Lynn Canal will increase in the post frontal southerly pressure gradient. Forecast changes today included a slight reduction to inner channels winds for much of the time, but an increase over the far northern inner channels late Thursday night. QPF was studied closely and in coordination with the River Forecast Center in Anchorage. Blended in the current high resolution model data to existing grids and the resulting solution produced a little more storm total precip than the previous forecast. 36 hour totals ranging from less than 1/2 inch over the northeast Gulf Coast and far northern inner channels to more than 3.5 inches over the southern inner channels and Misty Fjords. Overall short term forecast confidence is average. .LONG TERM.../Friday through Wednesday as of 10 pm Tuesday/ A wet pattern with high temperatures at or slightly below normal looks to continue for the foreseeable future. Night time low temperatures should be above climate normals during this time period. We begin the period with low pressure off the coast, weakening from a closed low into a trough. Winds may be a bit elevated, especially along coastal areas and the northern inner channels, during the first several hours of this forecast period, but have opted not to go all in quite yet as timing of the low weakening and the loosening of the associated pressure gradient is still up for debate amongst the various model solutions. After this low becomes a non-factor, ridging will begin to build over the region for the weekend. Flow will be onshore, so expect showers to continue through the weekend and cloud cover to continue to be pervasive. By Sunday, showers will become more spread out and while far from certain, there may be enough breaks in the clouds to get some of us hints of sun during the day. After the weekend, another low pressure system begins to move in on the region. Timing and intensity of this system is still pretty much up in the air but have opted to trend toward the WPC forecast for guidance. Toward the end of the forecast period, yet another low begins to move toward the region. Again, I reiterate that the models are not coming to a consensus, but if the latest operational GFS is to be believed this event will be quite a wind and rain maker. By no means has this made it into the current forecast, but it will be something to keep an eye on for future consideration.
