.SHORT TERM...Across much of the panhandle today, if you had a
chance to look out a window, or better yet, get outside, you might
have realized that it's an absolutely beautiful day. Furthermore,
in the good news department, these conditions are expected to
continue through the weekend. Ridging over the region will persist
for the next couple of days maintaining sunny skies and a precip
free next couple of days. Even Yakutat, which has been the lone
area today that has seen overcast skies and even a trace of
precip early in the afternoon, should get in on the clearing
Friday evening. High temperatures will continue to be amongst the
warmest in quite a while over the next couple of days this
weekend as well. A couple areas of the southern panhandle may even
challenge for 70 degrees, however the air aloft appears to be
somewhat cooler than thought during previous iterations of the
forecast, limiting, but not eliminating the chances for a few
areas of the north to reach 60. The converse of this and what may
actually aid in keeping the day time highs lower than previously
thought will be that the clear skies at night will allow for ample
radiative cooling. Depending on just how cold the night time lows
become could have an impact on the high the temperatures would
need to rebound to reach those currently in the forecast.

The wind will become a bit of an issue this weekend as high
pressure in Canada will impose a strong pressure gradient over the
northern panhandle. These gusty winds will be mostly noticeable
through Lynn Canal, Haines, Skagway and in downtown Juneau where
a weak mountain wave event will set up. At this point, it does
not appear to be more than a strong wind event, however, gusts to
50 mph may very well be possible. Given the fact that we will be
drying out and melting snow, any material (sand/gravel) from snow
mitigation measures may get blown around, resulting in localized
blowing dust.

.LONG TERM....../Sunday through Friday/...Looking ahead to the
long range forecast time frame, something to keep in mind is the
climate average highs. During the third week of April, climate
average highs around the panhandle range from the upper 40s to
lower 50s. I say this because the long range forecast has a slight
cooling trend, when compared to the upcoming weekend warmth. But
even with the slight cooling trend, the forecast is still calling
for warmer than climate average highs.

Finishing out the weekend in SE AK, Sunday will still have high
pressure in Canada so skies will remain clear and dry over the
panhandle. Highs on Sunday will reach the 60s to near 70 in the
south with 50s to low 60s expected for the central and northern
regions.

Going into next week, model ensemble guidance is showing high
pressure over the panhandle will weaken with hints of a low moving
in from the gulf beyond the 7 day forecast. As high pressure
weakens, high temps will dip a little bit but will still be at or
above the climate averages. Beginning Monday, and lasting through
the weekend, highs will mostly be in the 50s with lows within a
couple degrees of 40.

Precipitation chances are pretty slim overall but there are hints
of a trough that could bring some light precip Monday night to
areas along the coast. But the confidence is low on this due to
low agreement among the models.
