Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM.../Through Fri/ A weather front is still affecting the
area, with rain being observed from Juneau, Angoon, and Sitka
westward this afternoon. Some breezy conditions are also still
being observed at Yakutat this afternoon. Meanwhile, mostly clear
skies are being observed from Kupreanof Island and Prince of Wales
Island southward. With the clear skies temps have reached the 50s
across many areas of the south. Even the central and northern
inner channels have gotten in on the warmth this afternoon with
temps reaching the mid to upper 40s before the rain started up.

Rain continues to linger with a frontal zone stalling over the
central and northern panhandle tonight. Main area of rain will be
from Juneau, Angoon, and Sitka westward overnight with the
heaviest rainfall this evening (around a quarter of an inch
expected). The front will gradually dissipate in place through
Tonight and Thu as high pressure begins to build into the area.
Most areas should be dry by Thu night with clearing starting to
spread farther north and west. The winds will also diminish
tonight with most areas falling below 15 kt by late tonight. Some
fog is also expected in the clearer areas overnight tonight and
Thu night mainly in the southern panhandle and Yakutat.

With the drying and clearing skies, as well as persistent
southerly flow aloft, Temperatures are expected to be rather warm
for the late week period. Guidance continues to point at wide
spread 50s and possible 60s for highs for the southern half of the
panhandle Thu and Fri. The central and northern inner channels
are also looking at warm temps and highs for Thu and Fri have been
bumped up by around 5 degrees compared to the previous forecast
(Highs today were actually a few degrees above guidance lending
some support for the bump up). The central and northern inner
channels now have a shot at 50 for Thu afternoon and mid 50s for
Fri afternoon. This is contingent on cloud cover and how long
precip lingers in the area especially on Thu. If precip and
thicker cloud cover does linger longer then expected cooler
temperatures may be the result instead. Otherwise overnight lows
are still expected to remain above freezing for areas near sea
level through the short range.

.LONG TERM.../Friday through Wednesday/...The big question in the
long term forecast is - just how warm will the panhandle get this
weekend?

The long term forecast begins with a building ridge of high
pressure that is expected to last into, at least, the early parts
of next week. This ridge will push warm air and clearer skies
into the panhandle this weekend.

And when I say warm air, I mean near record warmth for this time
of year. Low to mid 60s are looking increasingly likely for the
southern parts of the panhandle while the north is looking at
widespread 50s.

One variable that would hold back temps in the north is the
snowpack on the ground. There are still many areas with a pretty
deep snowpack. Here in Juneau, we measured 19 inches of snow at
the office in the back of the valley while the airport is
reporting 0 inches of snow. That being said, temps can still warm
nicely with a deep snowpack. Hyder is reporting 36 inches of snow
on the ground and they were still able to reach the upper 40s on
Tuesday.

The warm temps will last into Monday but Tuesday and on is looking
slightly cooler with highs back in the 40s to 50s as the ridge
begins to break down.

As far as wind this weekend, they are looking overall on the
calmer side for most. Northern Lynn Canal could see some stronger
winds nearing 25 kts this weekend as the pressure gradient
tightens. But other areas are looking at winds around 10 to 20
kts or less.
