A wave of low pressure located in the southeast gulf moves north
over the central panhandle Saturday. High pressure builds
through the gulf Saturday night into Sunday. Outlook, high
pressure remains in the southern gulf through Monday causing
strong SW flow.

Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...At the surface, split flow dominates as a broad
area of low pressure has developed along the northern gulf with a
surface high located to the south. Through the central gulf, these
two flow patterns converge. A sharp temperature gradient has
developed across the gulf as a result of these two features. With
upper level support, precipitation has formed and is being pushed
onshore. Consequently, areas across the central and southern
panhandle are seeing precipitation beginning to increase this
morning. Unlike previous systems, this pattern has allowed for
adequate warm air advection into the panhandle. At time of
writing, temperatures have warmed above freezing for most
locations, even across the far northern inner channels. Due to
this, rain is expected as the primary precipitation type through
Friday. This evening, a surface wave develops along the sharp temp
gradient. This wave will enhance precipitation across the
southern panhandle while hinting towards a pseudo atmospheric
river pattern through Saturday. This will allow for precip to
become more widespread. QPf values of up to 2 inches can be
expected through Saturday with the highest amounts across the
south and lesser amounts between 0.5 to 1 inch across the Central
and Northern panhandle.

By Saturday afternoon, the surface ridge to the south begins to
shift to the SE as a new surface high develops south of the
Aleutians. This will allow for the heaviest precip to also shift
south of the panhandle causing POP to decrease from the north to
south. Behind this system, colder air begins to advect into the
panhandle. At this time p-type forecast becomes tricky. As the
current forecast stands, precip moves out of the panhandle before
temperatures cool enough to see a change over to snow. Where the
uncertainty exists is on timing of precip ending. If the moisture
sticks around longer than it is likely that areas across the
northern and central panhandle could see a change over to snow
Saturday evening. This being said, current thinking is that ptype
will remain rain as colder temps delay until precip moves out of
the panhandle. As the surface ridge continues to build through the
gulf, a drying trend is expected through Sunday. This period
looks to provide 24 hours of dry weather as well as decreasing
cloud cover from north to south through Sunday, with our dear
friend sunshine making a guest appearance.

Hazards are limited through the short term forecast. With the
split flow pattern, winds are expected to remain below small
craft levels with the exceptions of Lynn Canal and Clarence
Strait. Small crafts are expected to develop in Northern Lynn
this afternoon with a strong southerly push. As the weak surface
wave moves into the Panhandle Saturday morning, expect an
increase to small craft through Clarence Strait. Winds are then
expected to weaken and flip around to the north for most places
Saturday night into Sunday morning as the low departs the region
and a northerly gradient sets up.

.LONG TERM.../ Sunday through Friday as of 10PM Thursday / The
shortwave aloft over the eastern portion of the Gulf of Alaska
continues to dive southeast to the Puget Sound area by Sunday
afternoon. An upper level ridge moving into the gulf through
Sunday will be flattening from the sharper ridge that moved over
western Alaska. The ridge axis moves into western Canada by
Tuesday with another trough moving into the western Gulf
Wednesday. The flow pattern will be fast moving especially across
the top the of the flat ridge with 140 kt jet stream core driving
the small upper level impulses eastward. The jet weakens slightly
until Tuesday night with another 140 kt core into the panhandle
area.

At the surface a general broad trough of lower pressure extends
from British Columbia into the eastern gulf, but the best
positioning for the main trough lint will be near the Icy Strait-
Juneau corridor into the northeast gulf toward Prince William
Sound. As the surface ridge edges east a trough of lower pressure
will linger along the panhandle towards the Kenai Peninsula.

The incoming high pressure over the Pacific will hold over the
far southern gulf and combined with a strong low over the northern
Bering Sea will result in a strong westerly wind across the gulf
to the panhandle for the first half of the week.

Longer range models are spinning up moderately strong low for
Wednesday into the northern gulf that should be impact the
eastern gulf and panhandle area late Wednesday and into Thursday.
After that, general low pressure is expected to continue through
the rest of the week.

As result the general onshore flow from westerly flow aloft from
Monday onward will be showers until the Thursday morning system
where stratiform may be the norm with the front. P-type should be
rain for the southern half of the panhandle meanwhile a mix or
all snow for the showers in the north. Will need to keep an eye on
those amounts not to high to start.

Temperatures are expected to be seasonal for late March. Forecast
confidence is average from the weekend and next week.

Greatest rainfall is will be from Petersburg to Prince of Wales
and east to Hyder, and primarily along W to SW facing mountain
slopes. Rises are expected on area creeks, but remaining below
action stage. Deep snow depth in the Hyder area could cause
drainage issues.

Persistent W-SW winds will back to the S-SE early Saturday
morning along with gusts to around 40 mph, then winds quickly
shift back to the west by Saturday afternoon as the system passes.
The wind shift during the period of heavy rain could cause
movement in known slide areas. Rain decreases quickly from west
to east through Saturday afternoon.
