Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...Satellite imagery indicates a broad fetch of colder,
unstable air directing numerous showers across much of the
northern Panhandle. Visibility has tanked in brief snow squalls.
Despite 850 mb air temperatures dropping to near -10 C, solar
insolation has warmed temperatures just enough to allow some rain
to mix in at times in various locations across the north.
Continued marine, cool, unstable air should still support
scattered snow showers tonight into Saturday. But the real action
lies to the southeast of the low where strong southwest flow
directs wave after wave into the southern Panhandle. A leftover
frontal boundary persists across the region and was responsible
for a surprise burst of snow for Ketchikan this morning where
images on social media indicated an estimated quick inch of new
snow. Hyder, for its part, crept above freezing and has stayed
mostly rain all day. A mid-morning update changed p-type to mixed
for most all of the southern Panhandle to support snow-melt
cooling in heavier embedded showers across the region.

Cold air continues to filter into the entire Panhandle tonight,
even across the south. What once was a concerning wave scheduled
to spread across the entire southern Panhandle with an overrunning
snow event over Ketchikan and Prince of Wales Island has trended
eastward over the last 36 hours. Winter storm watches were
cancelled. But there is still concerns if the models are correct.
We did hold the forecast of 4 inches of snow for Hyder tonight,
with an inch possible in Ketchikan. Should the band trend west
again, these totals will be greater. But confidence is higher than
moderate at this point.

A surface low over the gulf underneath the main upper low should
spawn more numerous snow showers along the coast. We elevated the
typical inch of snow from showers near Cross Sound to 1 to 3. This
will have to be monitored for any training, as bands could set up
across this region that could drop much more than that. As this
low sinks southeast we do expect a drying trend to begin across
the north, expecially into Friday night. Outflow winds contribute
to this drying. Winds could be strong along the Klondike Highway
into Skagway and even Downtown Juneau. And considering
temperatures approaching zero, wind chill advisories are not out
of the question Friday night for White Pass.

Now back to the south, another wave looks to press into the far
southern region Friday night along the old frontal boundary. With
plenty of cold air in place, we expect accumulating snows in
Ketchikan and Hyder. Hyder's forecast of 7 to 10 inches from
Friday night into Saturday morning might not be so confident
because of some warmer air intrustion resulting in far wetter snow
that accumulates far less or even a change to rain. But
nevertheless we post a winter weather advisory for this time
period in coordination with our friends in Vancouver for Stewart,
BC. What becomes a challenge for us will be Ketchikan. It lies
precariously within the precipitation band. MOS snow numbers are
all over the map from the NAM's 1 inch to the GFS's 8 inches plus.
The Euro comes in with a much more moderate 4 to 6 inches. To
explore this possibility we have raised snowfall totals to 1 to 4
inches currently. But advisories or even a watch could be issued
Friday morning should confidence in a winter event rise.

.LONG TERM...Saturday through Thursday as of 10 pm Wednesday/By
the beginning of the long term forecast period, northerly winds
will be firmly entrenched in the region and moisture will be
coming up from the south around a low in the Gulf that is moving
south. This combinations sets up a significant forecast challenge
which if the models continue to show consistency, could lead to
some decent snow totals early Saturday morning and Sunday night.
The key questions will be how far will the moisture push north,
how warm will the southern panhandle stay at night, and how long
will this moisture continue to advect into the region before the
before the next frontal pressure system pushes into the region for
Monday/Monday night. The best certain answers we have for these
questions is that models continue to have some disagreement of
just how far north the impacts will travel. However, the prospect
of Juneau and even Skagway seeing at least some snow this weekend
appears more likely. As of now, snowfall amounts don't look to be
overly impactful, perhaps around advisory criteria, that far
north, but a few subtle changes to the PoP and QPF with newer
guidance could change this to a decent snow for at least Juneau,
or it could also just turn into a rather minor amount of snow. The
second question is that for the southern panhandle, the current
forecast keeps the temperatures at or below freezing during the
nighttime hours with warming to above freezing during the day. If
this push of warmer air from the south can overcome the colder
northerlies during the nighttime hours it would greatly inhibit
snow totals there. Which leads directly to the third question,
what the models are consistently agreeing on is that the bulk of
precipitation will fall in the far southern panhandle, Mainly to
areas up Clarence Strait, but also for Hyder and POW Island. If
temperatures do manage to drop enough at night to change over to
just snow, it could pile up down there pretty quick. So, for the
snow lovers out there, the snow was left in the forecast during
the night time hours, but we will have to see how the forecast
evolves.

By Sunday night, the northerly flow begins to break down and most
areas get a brief chance to dry out a bit with lingering chances
for showers. Diurnals will play an important role in determining
p-type through the week, mostly for the north as precipitation
chances continue through the end of the forecast period with yet
another front set to impact the region at a still uncertain time,
but right now looking like sometime Monday night or Tuesday. For
the south, conditions warm enough after Monday night that the most
likely precipitation type looks to be rain for sea level
locations regardless of the time of day.
