.SHORT TERM...A bit of a break from the active weather as a ridge
moves across the region tonight and early Wednesday. This should
scour out some of the clouds for the overnight hours which may
bring slightly cooler temps tonight than what we have seen lately
for overnight lows. The pressure gradient will begin to strengthen
around a deepening low in the Gulf that will be approaching the
region from the west. Fog was considered for the overnight hours
but winds should pick up just enough to prevent any from
happening. Chances for showers overnight will still exist through
the northeast Gulf coast and the northern half of the panhandle,
which may bring some light snow to those areas.
Through Wednesday, winds pick up considerably as a front
associated with the low moves in. More widespread precipitation
moves into the region during the morning hours. Most areas should
still be cool enough at the onset of precipitation to see some
snow or at least a mix, but the strong southerly push ahead of the
low should warm temperatures enough for a quick change to rain for
the southern panhandle and coastal areas. As the low deepens winds
pick up substantially bringing a smattering of strong wind
headlines and high wind gusts up to 65 mph for coastal areas from
around Sitka and southward, and then up into Clarence Strait.
Further north, the transition to rain should also occur, just
expect it to happen more slowly. The low currently looks to track
straight into the southern panhandle Wednesday night. Rain could
be heavy at times for the southern panhandle. While Wednesday
morning snow totals look to be rather small in the max 1 to 3 inch
range, the rainfall totals for the south could exceed an inch in
several locations over the duration of the event.
After the low passes through, flow turns onshore which will lead
to continued chances for showers through the end of the forecast
period. Over the course of the Wednesday low and trailing showers,
Juneau potentially could see a decent amount of snow, however a
lot of uncertainty lies in just how cool it will become Wednesday
night and how quickly it warms up Thursday morning, but a couple
of rounds of sub-advisory criteria snow appear likely there and in
other locations for the central and southern panhandle.
.LONG TERM.../Thursday through Tuesday night/...An active weather
pattern continues into the long term with three systems expected
to impact Southeast Alaska through early next week.
The long term begins with a weakening low moving southeast out of
the gulf and into the Southern Panhandle. Ensembles and
deterministic models have come into better agreement regarding the
track of this system. A blend of the NAM/Canadian reflect the
NAEFs and EC ensemble means, so adjusted the track accordingly by
shifting it a tad southward. The GFS brings the low even further
south; however it is an outlier compared to the ensembles and
other models. As far as impacts, snow showers across the north and
rain showers across the south will diminish through the day on
Thursday. West/northwesterly flow sets up across the gulf with
Gales in the outside waters and sub small craft winds through the
Inner Channels
Weak ridging builds in on Friday briefly drying out the Panhandle
before the next weather maker moves in from the west. By Saturday,
another low moves into the NW gulf swinging a front into the
Panhandle. Good upper level dynamics are associated with this
front as a SW-NE oriented jet pumps in subtropical moisture. The
NAEFs and EC Situational Awareness Tables already show IVT values
and PW 2 to 3 standard deviations above normal for this time
period. There is potential for heavy rain across the region this
weekend as there are signals an atmospheric river will develop
with this front. P-type should be predominantly rain with the
northerly track of the low and persistent southerly flow into the
Panhandle. The finer details regarding this system will become
clear in the coming days. For now, confidence is increasing regarding
the heavy rain potential this weekend.
Models and ensembles continue the active weather pattern into
early next week as there is good agreement another system will
move into the gulf behind the weekend system.
Focused mainly on the Thursday system, blending to the
NAM/Canadian for any changes. Increased winds over marine areas
and put some finer detail in for temperatures and P-type. Trended
towards WPC/NBM for the latter portion of the long term. No major
changes made to the extended portion of the forecast.
