.SHORT TERM...Warm air advection ahead of the lead front saw the
preciptiation across the panhandle for the majority of the area
start as snow and transition to rain, or a mix. Still straight
snow for Norther Glacier Bay, Yakutat, and the northern part of
Lynn Canal. Trailing weather front to lift northeast into the
panhandle tonight. Until that time warm air will continue spread
into the central and northern panhandle. Looking 925mb (approx
3000ft) temperatures, 0C line is moving into the Glacier Bay and
North in Lynn to almost Haines by Sunday morning, before colder
air moving from the Mainland over the northern gulf Sunday and
Sunday night. The rain snow line by Sunday morning should be near
the Haines/Skagway line.
Temps cooling Sunday will see showers be more snow and that
spreading southward through the panhandle. The flow pattern
continues result in the active westerly track so showers in the
chance to likely PoP range although a better organized
trough/front may be inbound for Monday.
Winter Storm warning for snow for Haines, Skagway and Road systems
active through tonight. Think the better location for heavier snow
amounts is near White Pass.
Cooled temperatures Monday and Monday night a few degrees in the
forecast using a NAM/GFS blend for the Monday part of the
forecast.
.LONG TERM.../Monday through Saturday night/...This long range
forecast period begins with a broad upper level trough situated
over the central Gulf and moving rapidly to the east. Upstream, a
larger upper level ridge moves in to take the place of the trough
by Tuesday morning. Upper level northwesterly jet flow at that
time will be between 70 and 100 kt over the Panhandle, but will
not last long. By Wednesday morning, the upper ridge will be in
the process of being ejected east by a sharp and negatively tilted
trough. This pattern will repeat through the balance of the
upcoming week, with variations in the strength of the ridges,
troughs, and corresponding jet streams. All in all, a very active
weather pattern for Southeast Alaska.
At the surface, a front will already be well ashore and producing
rain across most of Southeast Alaska as a result of warm low level
air being advected in from the southwest. Rain will change to snow
Monday night even as the precipitation diminishes. The panhandle
will get a break on Tuesday, but the next front will arrive on
Wednesday and bring significant snowfall to most of Southeast
Alaska that day. The transition to rain will occur first over the
southern outer coast by Wednesday afternoon, then the southern
inner channels later that evening. A transition to rain north of
Frederick Sound is not certain but precipitation amounts are
expected to taper off through the end of the work week. Long range
models are depicting still another front for the upcoming weekend
and this one is currently looking like another snow machine for
the northern half of Southeast Alaska through Saturday night.
Winds throughout the long range forecast period are looking to be
quite mild for the Gulf of Alaska and the inner channels
considering it is Winter. At present, gales are limited to the
offshore waters of marine zone 310 with periods of small craft
winds for the ocean entrances of Cross Sound, Chatham Strait, and
SUmner Strait.
