.SHORT TERM.../ Through Monday night / The low in the SE gulf is
west of Sitka early Sunday morning and will circle west to near
140 West and then move south-southeast out of the gulf by Monday
morning. The associated frontal band is across Admiralty, Baranof,
Chichagof, and Prince of Wales Islands this morning and the main
snow band is from Angoon to Kake to Klawock this morning. As the
low starts to move away from the panhandle this morning, the
shower activity will begin to taper off.

Northerly outflow has already started with cold dry air spilling
south over the northern panhandle. Gale force winds of 35 to 40 kt
are occurring in the Lynn Canal marine forecast zones. Expect to
see the temperatures to continue to either stay steady today and
fall more overnight or slowly fall through the day. Near zero or
colder temperatures along the Haines Highway is a good
possibility Monday night. With the cold temperatures and winds
near White Pass, think wind chill temperatures will fall to or
below -30 degrees tonight into Tuesday morning. The strongest wind
are expected to occur through Sunday evening and slowly diminish
into to Tuesday morning. So issued a Wind Chill advisory for the
White Pass area of the Klondike Highway.

A trough of lower pressure extending southward towards the region
of lower pressure will stay near the Cape Suckling region late
Sunday to Monday. It is anticipated to start drifting east by
early Tuesday morning and should bring a chance of snow the area
west of Yakutat by late Monday night.

.LONG TERM.../Monday through Wednesday night/...the mid term
forecast begins with a very cold panhandle. Monday morning
forecasted temperatures are in the single digits to teens for most
of SE AK, a few lows in the 20s are possible in the far southern
region. And going forward, the cold – below normal – temperatures
will continue through much of next week.

A 500mb ridge will pass over the panhandle early in the week.
This should keep clear to mostly clear skies over the area through
Monday night. And this time of year, clear skies can be
associated with below normal temps, upwards of 10 to 20 degrees
below normal! So while Monday’s weather is looking quiet, the
high temperatures around the region look to be in the 20s for the
south, teens to 20s for the central and coastal areas, single
digits to teens for the Haines/Skagway area.

The strong winds from the weekend will gradually and slowly
decrease Monday into Tuesday. That being said, still expecting
inner channel marine wind speeds to be 25 to over 35 kts for Lynn
Canal through Monday night while 15 to 25 kt speeds elsewhere.

Going into Tuesday, the 500mb ridge looks to break down a bit as
a trough and associated surface low track near SE AK. This pattern
would bring clouds back to the area and some potential
precipitation. But with general offshore flow, have kept the
precip potential only in the Yakutat area for now. Put mostly
clear skies, with increasing clouds, over the inner channels.

Wednesday could be tricky. An advancing ridge could push the
forecasted snow near Yakutat into the northern inner channel
areas. So PoPs were allowed to move eastward over the bulk of the
panhandle.

/ Thursday to Saturday/ At the moment the trend of moving the next
significant front to later in the week has stopped. Guidance has
started to focus on Thu night into Fri for timing for about 24
hours now. Temperatures start warming Fri, but it will still be
cold enough for snow most places (temps topping out in the mid to
low 30s) with the possibility of significant snow increasing. We
will continue to watch this system to see if there are any more
changes to the timing of it (which their could still be. Most
likely getting pushed later if there are).
