.SHORT TERM...Pressure has been steadily rising overnight across
the region, on the order to 3-6mb in the last 6hrs. This is due to
low pressure moving away to the distant south and building high
pressure in the Yukon. As a result, we have mostly clear skies,
widespread N-NELY outflow winds, and well below normal
temperatures.
With little in the way of clouds and no precip in the forecast,
the main forecast challenges continue to be winds and
temperatures. The pattern looks fairly steady state through the
next 24hrs with regard to winds, but temps aloft steadily
decrease. For this reason, have placed today's high temperature
in the morning, then falling or remaining steady through the day.
Winds overnight caused enough mixing everywhere to actually
increase the temperatures into the low to mid 20s. The wind speeds
were actually 5-10 knots lower than expected in some of the
outflow areas and Lynn Canal, so have decreased winds some for
today to match current conditions. Warmer temps and slightly lower
winds reduced the threat for freezing spray (but there is still
some potential in the forecast), and very cold wind chills. The
timing of the wind chill advisory for White Pass has been delayed
until 10pm tonight.
Forecast confidence in the overall pattern is above average, but
lower for the wind/temps details. Some locations have seen a steep
inversion develop with temps falling into the single digits
(Yakutat/Mendenhall Valley) while others have had sporadic gusts
of wind and temps spiking into the mid 20s (Juneau/Haines). Some
locations that will continue to have the warmest temps due to
downslope or outflow winds will be: Skagway, Downtown Juneau,
Tenakee Springs, Sitka, Port Alexander, Kake, Wrangell (just to
name a few).
.LONG TERM...The strong northerly outflow winds will still be
present on Saturday, but will be on the diminishing trend for the
rest of the period as the strong and dominant area of high
pressure over the Canadian Yukon weakens and drifts southward,
weakening the pressure gradient between that region and
relatively lower pressure over the eastern Gulf region. This will
allow a relatively weak low pressure center to approach the outer
coast of the Panhandle from the northwest, drift southeastward,
staying just offshore. Insulating clouds and quick chances for
precipitation will increase as the low approaches southeast
Alaska.
Ensembles and 850mb model forecast temperatures keep us cold with
some modest variation depending on the location of highs and lows
through the period. The temperatures will slowly and modestly
warm as the aforementioned strong established high drifts
southeastward through British Columbia, progressively weakens, and
the aforementioned low approaches Panhandle. This process will
weaken the northerly outflow and CAA. The low looks to bring some
weak WAA into the area along with some light snow activity with
the greatest amounts along the outer coast as the Gulf low skirts
by, just off the Panhandle, moving southeastward. The cloud cover
will provide a layer of insulation over the Panhandle, keeping
the temperatures modestly warmer Sunday night.
The bit of good news with the aforementioned low is that it
should be weak and a quick-mover, only bringing impacts to the
Panhandle Sunday evening through early Monday morning and due to
the well-established cold air in place and high forecast snow
ratios will make the snow quite powdery. Total forecast QPF values
will be low due to the quick-moving nature of the low, which
should most likely translate into less than advisory-level snow
accumulations.
After the low departs, a ridge will build into the eastern Gulf
and Panhandle, once again, bringing decreased cloudiness and
dry/cold conditions for up to a couple more days.
Some locations throughout the Panhandle may break record overnight
low temperatures over the Holiday Weekend with some locations in
the northern Panhandle dipping down as low as 10 below zero. Be
sure to dress warmly and limit time outdoors if you can to avoid
frostbite. Windy conditions will make it feel quite a bit colder,
especially on Saturday into Sunday. MOS continues to under-perform
for forecasting the cold outbreak, due to its heavy climatological
bias. A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect until Noon AKST Sunday
for the Klondike Highway area for dangerously low wind chills as
low as 35 to 45 below zero.
Pretty solid model agreement was seen, today. Therefore, forecast
confidence is average to above average for the long-term forecast
period. A GFS/CMC/ECMWF/NAM blend was used for the forecast.
