Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...Snow showers continue to diminish in intensity and
coverage across the northern panhandle as outflow winds begin to
pick up. An arctic front has been advancing S from the Yukon, with
its effects already being felt in the form of steadily dropping
temperatures across the area. Yakutat especially has seen
temperatures rapidly drop, reaching the low teens. Through the
day, temperatures across many areas will struggle to rebound as
cold air advection competes with the limited amount of daytime
heating. In some places, temperatures may simply keep on dropping
through the day in spite of any daytime heating. Accompanying the
cooler weather, the N half of the area will see slowly clearing
skies through the latter half of the day, a trend which will last
until the next major system arrives on Saturday. Winter Storm
Watches have been posted for much of the N and Central panhandle
with this next system, as the potential for more significant snow
at sea level does exist. With the cold weather and the outflow
winds comes a wind chill advisory for the Klondike Highway and
White Pass for Friday night with wind chills anticipated to reach
-35 F below.

Between the major systems, the far southern panhandle will see
precipitation associated with a short wave ejecting south of the
panhandle. A mix of rain and snow is expected across the south
with this system through Friday morning. Due to the saturated
environment, low snow ratios, and marginal temperatures, snow
accumulations are expected to remain on the lower side with
upwards of 2 inches of snow accumulation, although some areas at
higher elevations could see higher amounts. The short wave will
have largely left the panhandle by Friday evening, paving the way
for a window of potentially drier weather for the far S until
Saturday morning.

Winds in the inner channels will be blustery through the period.
Lynn Canal is anticipated to reach gale force during the day on
Friday, and many other channels are likely to see small craft
winds as cold air outflow surges through the fjords. Timing of
when the winds reach full strength-and how long they ultimately
take to diminish, will continue to remain a challenge. In
addition, the breezy conditions could encourage downsloping in
some areas, keeping them warmer than conditions would otherwise
allow for. Overall, the primary changes made to the forecast were
some additional adjustments to temperatures using a mixture of MOS
guidance and the the NBM in order to get better timing on any
possible moderation in temperatures during peak diurnal heating
hours. Forecaster confidence is average.

.LONG TERM.../Saturday through mid next week/ Very active period
continues this weekend and into next week as winter takes hold of
Southeast Alaska.

**Winter Storm Expected This Weekend**

An arctic high in place on Saturday will bring some of the coldest
air of the season to Southeast Alaska. With all of this cold air in
place at the surface, the next storm system moving in is expected to
bring significant amounts of snow to portions of the Panhandle.
Southeast Alaska will be in a prime spot for heavy precipitation as
the region will be located just south of the right entrance region
of a jet streak to the north and north of the left exit region of an
approaching jet streak from the south.
At the same time a near storm force low in the western gulf will
swing a front into the Panhandle from the south. Ensemble member low
locations have been all over the Gulf with potential tracks for this
system over the past few days. Guidance has come into a bit better
agreement today with the low position and track. A likely path for
the low will be coming out of the N pacific and moving NE towards
the Northern Gulf Coast. This solution agrees well with WPC, the
ensembles, and deterministic models so will be keeping with this
solution. This pattern is favorable for potentially heavy snow
before a changeover to rain. The arctic high to the north is
expected to have deep enough cold air for precipitation to begin as
snow Saturday afternoon through Sunday. Precipitation is expected to
change to rain from south to north as the front pushes northward
through the Panhandle. The southern Panhandle may begin as snow
saturday before changing to rain during the day. The deeper cold air
in place across the north will allow the Northern Panhandle to
remain snow much longer. Thinking that area has a good chance of
receiving accumulating snow Saturday evening through Sunday morning.
Therefore, have posted a Winter Storm Watch from the Icy Strait
Corridor northward for potential accumulations of 5 to 8+ inches of
snow.

Expect a change to rain Sunday morning for Juneau, Hoonah, and
Gustavus areas as the front pushes northward and a dry slot takes
over. Much lighter precipitation, mainly in the form of rain, is
expected Sunday afternoon as warmer air (above 32) moves in.

Guidance is now hinting at a wave developing along the triple point
of the front just off the coast of Prince of Wales Island Sunday
evening. There is enough agreement between the ensembles and
deterministic models to put this in the forecast. This wave will
significantly increase precipitation amounts across the Southern
Panhandle, including Ketchikan and Misty Fjords.
Ensembles are showing copious amounts of moisture possible during
this time frame with PW and IVT values 2 to 4 standard deviations
above normal for this time of year. This wave is expected to move
north through the Panhandle, with the heaviest precipitation on the
south and east side. There is a chance for a changeover back to snow
across the northern Panhandle as this wave moves in Sunday night.
Confidence is low regarding this part of the forecast; however this
will be monitored closely.

Next week looks to be very active with multiple lows moving into the
Gulf from the south. Too early to get into exact details regarding
the storm systems for next week due to poor model and ensemble
agreement. Despite lower confidence in storm track and evolution,
confidence remains high in a continued active weather pattern
through next week for Southeast Alaska.

Used a blend of GFS/EC/Canadian through the weekend then transition
to mainly WPC guidance through next week.
