A weakening low pressure system off the central outer coast of
the Panhandle tracks to the northern gulf and dissipates
Wednesday. Southerly winds over the inner channels will pick up 
starting over the southern inner channels Wednesday morning 
shifting to the northern inner channels by Wednesday night.

through Wednesday evening as a trough of low pressure sweeps over

Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM.../Through Thursday/ The short term features multiple
weak systems that will keep precipitation around through the rest
of the week. Current satellite imagery depicts an area of low
pressure in the SE gulf with a weak frontal feature pushing
northward through the Panhandle. Light rain will persist across
region tonight with the most widespread showers across the
Southern half of the panhandle. Offshore flow in the lowest levels
has kept the northern Panhandle much drier with a higher cloud
deck and lighter rainfall rates.

On Wednesday, the low in the gulf lifts northward towards the NE
gulf coast. As it does so, a southerly push will lift through the
Panhandle as the gradient flips from a light northerly to a stout
southerly. A brief period of strong winds will be possible as this
southerly push occurs through the day. Expect small craft
conditions in the Southern Inner Channels tomorrow morning to lift
northward into the Northern Inner Channels by the evening. Low
end Gale force conditions possible in Lynn Canal tomorrow night as
this southerly push occurs. Expect rain showers to increase in
coverage and intensity as well as flow becomes onshore at all
levels and cold air advection moves in aloft.

The next system on interest arrives Thursday night as a low in the
northern gulf pushes a front into the Panhandle. At the same time,
cold air advection continues to flow in from the west, allowing
1000-850mb thickness values to fall into the 1290s. Model
soundings indicate an unstable mid layer with steep lapse rates
and a saturated dendritic growth zone. There is potential for snow
to mix in with rain at times at sea level for portions of the
northern Panhandle. Confidence remains low in the snow potential
at sea level; however this is something to watch as most areas
have not seen their first snow of the season yet. Expect the
predominate P-type to be rain; however heavier precipitation rates
may be able to briefly change it over to snow. Areas along and
north of the Icy Strait corridor have the best chance at seeing
snow mix in late Thursday night. Expect any accumulating snow to
remain along the Haines and Klondike Highways with this system.

Overall, a showery Southeast Alaska weather pattern remains in
place through the week. Breezy conditions expected Wednesday as
the gradient flips to the south. Confidence in the forecast
remains around average. Lowest confidence in the snow potential
Thursday night into Friday morning.

.LONG TERM.../Thu through Tue as of 10 pm Mon/ Upper level
features will be shifting around throughout the long range period.
At the start of the extended period a broad upper trough will
extend over most of the state with the main axis of it over the
Bering Sea area (W to SW flow over the panhandle). This starts to
shift into the weekend as a rather strong upper ridge begins to
build over the panhandle and Western Canada. This feature
generally remains in place through the end of the forecast period.

So what does this mean for the panhandle. Well to start with, the
panhandle will remain somewhat damp for the late week period as
two shortwaves embedded in the onshore flow move through (one
early Thu and the second on Fri). Neither one is really strong
with 25 to 30 kt winds and periods of rain dropping up to 3
tenths of an inch of rainfall at most. The real question mark is
whether areas will be cold enough for some of that rain to mix
with snow at sea level. Thu morning into Fri a cooler air mass
will be moving over the area with 850 mb temps dipping into the -4
to -6 C range. However, most areas will still be seeing southerly
flow at low levels for most of that time period, and 1000 to 850
mb thicknesses never really dip below 1290 during the entire time
period. So, at most any mix with snow will be confined to the
northern inner channels and maybe isolated areas of the central
inner channels during the late night and early morning hours.
Little to no snow accumulation is expected if snow does occur.

Into the weekend and early next week, The strong upper ridge
projected to build over the area is expected to dry the panhandle
out. The major front that is situated over the gulf at this time
will mainly be a wind (possibly up to gale force) and waveheight
(seas up to 20 ft possible) issue for the gulf waters while the
main rain bands will be aimed well to the west of the area.
Meanwhile southerly flow will still be in effect potentially
bringing warmer air into the area. Guidance is showing 850 mb
temps possibly reaching 4 to 7 degrees C by Sun night so freezing
levels will be on the rise and daytime highs will reach into the
40s and possible near 50 in the south if this scenario persists.
