.SHORT TERM.../ Through Thursday night /...The short term
forecast begins with a front along the coast. This front has been
giving rain to areas along the coast and a few select cities
around the panhandle throughout the day.
Going forward, the clouds and light rain will continue. An area
of low pressure will travel from just west of Haida Gwaii to near
the Anchorage area. As this low moves northward, it should take
the band of moisture sitting near the coast and push it over the
panhandle so everywhere has a decent chance for rain tomorrow.
Tonight, some snow or rain/snow mix is likely for higher
elevation areas but should switch back to rain tomorrow as the low
moves north and the panhandle gets a push of slightly warmer air
in the atmosphere.
Winds should pick up as well as the low moves north. Strong Wind
headlines have been added to Sitka and Hydaburg for wind gusts
around 40 mph. Wind speeds over marine areas should be elevated as
well. Open ocean winds are expecting to get to 25 to 45 kts near
the low. Inner channel winds will be strongest near ocean
entrances at 20 to 30 kts. Farther into the panhandle, 10 to 20 kt
winds are more likely.
.LONG TERM.../Thursday through Tuesday/...Eyes continue to focus
on whatever short-wave energy develops in the outer gulf and
re-curves northeast and then northwest along the Canadian and SE
AK coast. Solutions remain mixed even into parts of the shorter
range and become even more muddled late this week, especially of
medium and smaller strength systems. Emerging from all of this, a
much stronger feature appears with more robust consistency early
Friday in the Southeast Gulf. Because of this, we updated the
Special Weather Statement to redefine the window of high wind
potential from Thursday into the weekend with Friday becoming a
period of special interest.
While operational GFS is persistent at indicating 50 kt plus wind
in Dixon Entrance, the southeast gulf, and portions of the
southern Panhandle; ensembles, while agreeing geographically, are
much less inclined to indicate such a deep feature. In fact, no
individual member of the GEFS is currently advertising winds of 50
kt magnitude and only just over half suggest gale force or
greater (35 to 45 kt). Yet even so, some special credence needs to
given to operational runs, not least because of the much larger
data sets involved in their initial conditions, even of complex
terrain. The 00Z Canadian is now pushing winds in the southeast
gulf of 45 kt, now forming a coalition of sorts with the stronger
GFS solution.
With this in mind we concentrated edits across the southern and
central Inner Channels, adding 25 to 35 kt of wind (Sumner and
Clarence the highest). We upped southeasterlies across Prince of
Wales, Baranof, Revilla, and Annette as well including Ketchikan
and Sitka with 20 to 30 mph sustained winds. Confidence in
strength at this stage prevents us from posting any kind of watch,
so the special weather statement suffices for now. We also
increased winds in specific areas for the north-central Panhandle
as well. With such a strong upper low entering the southeast gulf,
500 mb vorticity fields drive significant lobes of spin
northwestward along the Coast Mountains. With critical level in
place, we could see some stronger gusts set up in Downtown Juneau
and Douglas Thursday night/Friday ahead of any precip bands. As
such a strong system passes northwest along the coast, a safe bet
is to swing winds through the Inner Channels at least briefly from
north to south through Friday night. How strong is debatable, but
there could be more strength than the 20 to 25 kt in the forecast
at this stage. But quickly winds reset back to north for the rest
of the weekend.
Yet another storm appears behind the first, even among ensemble
solutions. Details of this one are sketchier, but it appears to
follow a similar path but with weaker strength. Behind this
system, we will likely see others in some shape or form, as the
pattern looks to continue. Perhaps just as significant, the
pattern seems to cast doubt on any early season sea level snow
through much of late October. While warm air intrudes where it
generally rains more--across the south and parts of the coast--
the north, if cold, generally is drier as well.
Little changes were made across temperature POP/QPF fields. The
emerging pattern favors wetter conditions across the south with
somewhat drier regions across the north as low level offshore
winds add a drying element to the atmosphere. Clearly any heavy
rain trapped in the North Pacific jet should remain to our south.
With mean southerly flow within the mid-range period, we expect
temperatures to be seasonal to above normal. Any snow will be
confined to the high elevations. White Pass looks to be both too
far from the bulk of the precipitation and even too low in
elevation to receive any thing of significance.
