Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...A vertically stacked low just southeast of Kodiak
Island and a narrow ridge along the panhandle. The ridge has
slowed down the eastward progression of the frontal boundary that
has is strung out from near the Kenai Peninsula and then
southwards past Cape Suckling then over to near 140 W as the front
runs southward nor the mid 30s Latitude north. As of this
afternoon the rain band has included Yakutat, but has not started
into the panhandle. This positioning and slow movement of the
boundary will focus the heavier rainfall totals to west of
Yakutat.

The front will start spreading in slowly during the early evening
and to the Juneau area just after midnight. The weather front
will move through the panhandle by Monday night, as the main low
center moves to east of Kodiak about 150 nm. Flow about the
stacked system will continue into the northeast gulf coast and
the northern panhandle. The southern portion will be more
southwest flow, and the model solutions into Tuesday seem to be a
bit drier in that location of the southern coastal areas (south
of Sitka) will likely see shower taper off or even end through the
day Tuesday.

With the cloud cover over the area not expected to shift much and as
a slightly cooler air mass that had moved to the gulf and into
the panhandle is not expected to alter much through the first part
of the week. Highs should range from the upper 50s to lower 60s
and the lows in the upper 40s to lower 50s. Only small daily
diurnal range into the start of the week. Behind the front on
Tuesday breaks in the overcast are more likely so brief periods of
sunshine are possible mainly for the southern part of the
panhandle, which if does occur will bring temps up a few more
degrees in the sunshine.

Coastal winds 25 to 35 kt for tonight and perhaps into early
Monday morning, otherwise no strong winds for SE Alaska into mid
week.

.LONG TERM.../Tuesday through Saturday night/...This extended
range forecast begins with a large upper level low established
over the north-central Gulf. The low will move very slowly to the
west over the following 24 hours, then track southeast before
turning to the northeast on Thursday morning. At that time, a
positively tilted upper trough will dig to the southwest over the
Yukon and spawn another upper low over the northeast Gulf coast
Friday morning. This feature will be transient, as it never
completely separates from the parent upper trough and, as the
trough continues to dig south, the the low follows suit out of the
forecast area by Sunday morning.

At the surface, a weak surface reflection of the first upper
low will dominate the northern Gulf on Tuesday. This low will
linger in the Gulf of Alaska and slowly weaken through Thursday
before dissipating near the southern outer coast. Wrap-around
shower activity from this low will persist over Southeast Alaska
through late week in the presence of a very weak upper level
pattern with no meaningful steering flow aloft or at the surface.

Weak ridging over the Panhandle while the low persists over the
Gulf will generate southerly winds of 15 to 20 kts over Lynn Canal
at time through the remainder of the work week. as the low weakens
and drifts southeast, the gradient will diminish, leaving even
Lynn Canal at only 10 to 15 kts this weekend. Daytime highs will
remain at the low end of normal for this time of the year under
mostly cloud to cloudy skies. Might this be the end of Summer? At
least we're not drying out and burning up like the western half of
the lower 48, so we've got that going for us.
