Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Very active weather will be ramping up today as a strong weather
front brings snow, freezing rain, and rain to many locations
across Northern Alaska. The greatest threat of freezing rain and
rain will primarily be confined to the Seward Peninsula southeast
to the Upper Kuskokwim Valley and west to the Yukon Delta. Snow
on the leading edge of this front has pushed into the Fairbanks
Area and will continue into early Sunday. While this is
all happening, a secondary, stronger front will push across the
West Coast and Western Interior tonight bringing additional
widespread snow, freezing rain, and rain that will surge into the
Interior by Sunday morning, affecting the greater Fairbanks Area
with snow and a greater threat of substantial freezing rain
accumulation.

.DISCUSSION...
Upper Levels and Analysis...
The current pattern across Northern Alaska consists of a strong
ridge at 500 hpa extending north from the Northern Pacific into
the West Coast. As the day progresses, the ridge will slowly
slide east, allowing copious amounts of tropical moisture to
surge north into Northern Alaska through the weekend as a series
of fronts move across the Interior. All this being said, at the
surface, the initial push of mixed precipitation has begun across
the West Coast and will move inland into portions of the Western
Interior as the morning progresses while snow has reached the
Central Interior with the first front. This front will bring the
first round of significant snowfall to the greater Fairbanks Area
today into Sunday morning. This will be followed by a second,
stronger, front that develops over the Bering Sea today and then
pushes inland to the Central Interior Sunday morning, resulting
in additional major winter weather impacts across the Interior.

Model Discussion...
This pattern has been advertised well by model guidance over the
last several days, but there has been some minor differences on
the exact details and placement of precipitation types and amounts
with the track of the fronts. But, in general, all model guidance
is showing a substantial amount of moisture being pulled into
Northern Alaska over the weekend bringing widespread heavy snow,
freezing rain, and rain. There remains some uncertainty with the
exact amount of freezing rain that will impact the Interior,
particularly for Fairbanks, but guidance is indicating the
possibility of up to one half inch of ice accumulation impacting
portions of the Interior. For this morning's forecast package, we
are using a general blend of model data from the 00Z and 06Z
runs.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A strong weather front will reach the Western Arctic Coast this
afternoon, brining snow and increased easterly winds along the
Beaufort Sea Coast. This front will slide east and be reinforced
by a secondary push of moisture north into the region as a second
front moves into the West Coast Sunday. Areas south of Utqiagvik,
over the Arctic Plain, can expect to see anywhere from 4 to 8
inches of snow through Sunday. Winter Storm Warnings are in
effect for the Northeastern Brooks Range and Central Beaufort
Coast for heavy snow and blowing snow concerns, where 6 to 9
inches of snow will fall along the Dalton Highway and at higher
elevations of the Eastern Brooks Range. These systems will also
bring warmer temperatures into the region, with areas along the
Arctic Coast near zero and areas south reaching the teens above
for Sunday.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Freezing rain and rain is currently affecting portions of the
Yukon Delta north to the Seward Peninsula this morning, while
areas to the north and east snow has begun. The freezing rain and
rain threat will grow north and east as warmer air surges north
over the weekend with a series of fronts moving into and across
the West Coast and Western Interior. Another front will quickly
move in tonight bringing an additional round of widespread
freezing rain and rain concerns across West Coast from the Seward
Peninsula south and reaching eastward into the Western Interior.
The general concensus of freezing rain amounts is up to one tenth
of an inch along the West Coast, with between one tenth and one
quarter inch of accumulation into the Western Interior today into
Sunday night. For areas further north, large amounts of snow are
expected across the Western Interior with amounts ranging from 8
to 10 inches for the Lower Kobuk and Noatak Valleys to 10 to 15
inches for the Upper Kobuk and Noatak Valleys through Sunday
night.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Snow has moved into the Central Interior overnight and is the
beginning of an unprecedented winter storm that will impact the
region over the holiday weekend. Heavy snow with significant
accumulations are expected, with the Fairbanks Area receiving
anywhere from 10 to 15 inches, with localized amounts up to 20
inches to the north and east. Elsewhere, along the Alaska Range
and Parks Highway, south of Nenena, will get hammered with snow
amounts ranging from 10 inches near Nenana to 25 inches near
Healy. With that being said, freezing rain chances today will be
minimal with greater chances by early Sunday morning, where one
quarter to one half inch of freezing rain is possible to fall on
top of the snow that will fall today. The highest amounts of ice
accumulation are expected from Fairbanks south along the Parks
Highway through Nenana to the Alaska Range, Sunday morning into
Sunday night. Expect a sharp warming trend over the weekend, with
temperatures reaching the low to mid 30s during this period of
freezing rain.

Coastal Hazard Potential for Days 3 and 4...
No concerns at this time.

Extended Forecast for Days 4 Through 7...
Beginning the extended period on Tuesday, active weather continues
across Northern Alaska as several storms will roll through into
