Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...Cold will hang on but moderate a few degrees warmer as
a strong low moves into the Gulf of Alaska and some warmer air and
high clouds moves over the area into Thursday. Temperatures in
the Interior will cool again later in the week. A trough moving
around the low will bring some chances of snow or flurries to the
Interior Wednesday and Thursday. The Arctic will remain quiet. The
West Coast will be quiet until late in the week when a strong
weather system will move to the coast bringing warmer temperatures,
strong winds, and snow.

.DISCUSSION...

Models...Very good run to run continuity with the 29/00Z
solutions, and they are in good agreement through the extended
periods. Will use a general blend of the solutions again today,
but limit the amount of GFS for precipitation as it seems to be a
bit of an outlier at this time.

Aloft...At 500 hpa...Broad troughing with a 500 dam low over
St Marys and troughing extending northeast to a 501 dam low over
Chandalar Lake, and a 497 dam over Banks Island, then north to a
501 dam low in the high Arctic. Ridging extends southeast across
the Arctic over MacKenzie Bay from a 517 dam high near 78N 175E.
Ridging extends south from the same high over Chukotka to a 521
dam high west of the Gulf of Anadyr and south over the Western
Bering Sea. A low that was near Amchitka yesterday has moved to
150 nm south Sand Point at 502 dam with another low 200 nm south
of Adak at 512 dam. Weak ridging is pushing northeast over the
Gulf of Alaska, then just north of the Aleutians. Tuesday morning
the low over St Marys will move to 100 nm east of the Pribilofs
with trough extending north to a 499 dam low over Buckland, then
northeast over Prudhoe Bay and the Beaufort Sea. The low that was
south of Sand Point will move over the Western Gulf of Alaska at
506 dam and eventually merge with the low near the Pribilofs as it
moves over Kodiak Island Tuesday night. Ridging will slide
northeast to the south slopes of the Brooks Range and push west
to the Middle Yukon Valley with 510 dam heights over Fairbanks.
At 850 hpa...Temperatures below -20C this morning with the -20C
isotherm being pushed north and west to the Yukon River this
afternoon. By Tuesday morning the -20C isotherm will move to the
Brooks Range and over the West Coast. Temperatures around -10C
will move over the Alaska Range Tuesday morning. Temperatures will
start cooling Tuesday night.

Surface...High in the Arctic is 400 nm north of Wrangel Island at
1030 mb, with a 1022 mb high in the central Arctic Plain, and a
1024 mb high near Dawson YT. High pressure also extends south to
a 1023 mb high over the Chukotsk Peninsula, then south across
the Western Bering Sea. The low that has been in Prince William
Sound has weakened and merged with the low that was near Nikolski
and has moved to 150 nm south of Sand Point at 964 mb with a 984
mb low 200 nm south of Adak. By Tuesday morning the high in the
Arctic will be quasi stationary as it weakens to 1029 mb with
ridging extending southeast across the Eastern Arctic Coast to a
1019 mb high east of Old Crow YT. Low that was near Sand Point
will move to 100 nm southeast of Kodiak City at 972 mb while the
low that was trailing it will move east along 50N. A low will form
along the front associated with the low and move to Sitka Tuesday
morning at 974 mb. A inverted trough will form over the West
Coast Tuesday with another forming over the Central Interior west
of Fairbanks.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Low remains near Banks Island
with trough just offshore of the Eastern Arctic Coast east of
Utqiagvik. Stratus remains over the coastal areas with flurries.
Breaks in the stratus as high pressure has built in over the
Plains. Winds north to northeast at 5 to 15 mph for coastal areas
west of Nuiqsut, with west to northwest winds from Nuiqsut east,
and lighter winds in the Plains. Winds from Prudhoe Bay east
southwest to west at 5 to 15 mph. Wind Chill near 40 below east of
Prudhoe Bay into the afternoon. Highs today 10 below to 20s
below. Lows tonight falling to 15 to 30 below for most areas along
the coast, and 25 below to 45 below in the Plains and Brooks
Range.

West Coast and Western Interior...Mostly clear except on the
Capes and St Lawrence Island, and stratus that was over the
Interior has moved over the Lower Yukon Delta and Nulato Hills.
A few snow squalls remain possible on the Capes and St Lawrence
Island. Stratus will be eroding today and sliding south. Gusty
north winds through the Bering Strait continue. Strong winds
extend from Point Hope through the Strait to Cape Romanzof with
the strongest winds around Little Diomede and on St Lawrence
Island with gusts around 30 mph. Winds will continue from the
north moving inland and diminish rapidly to less than 10 mph.
Further inland winds will continue to be light and variable.
Highs today ranging from near 10 above west of Nome to around 10
below around Nome, to the teens below in the Middle Yukon, and
range from 20 below to around 30 below in the Kotzebue Sound
Region and Upper Kobuk. Lows tonight will range from the single
digits above on St Lawrence Island to the single digits below on
the Capes to the 20s below from Nome east to the Middle Yukon
Valley, to around 40 below from Buckland to Selawik to Ambler.

Central and Eastern Interior...Inverted trough moved west and
skies have cleared for the most part with temperatures bottoming
out this morning around 40 below with most areas in the 30s below.
Around Fairbanks Industrial plumes will produce a few flurries.
Mostly clear conditions will continue into the evening, then
expect some high clouds to move over the southern Interior. Winds
northeast to 5 mph for most locations with winds to 10 to 20 mph
on summits this morning diminishing to 5 to 15 mph. With cold
temperatures continuing across the area Wind Chill around 40
below still possible above treeline on summits and in the White
Mountains. Alaska Range winds will turn from the south at 5 to 15
mph today, while the Tanana Valley Jet will set up near Delta
Junction with southeast winds increasing to 15 to 25 mph and
gusty. Temperatures slightly warmer with overnight lows falling
to 20 to 35 below. Highs Tuesday will range from around 5 below
to 20 below.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...Strong southeast to
southwest winds will move to the West Coast Thursday evening
breaking up the ice along the south edge. There is potential for
an Ivu at Scammon Bay as conditions will be similar to a 2019
event. The strong winds will also push water on top of the ice
through breaks, and along the coast.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...Low in the Northern Gulf of
Alaska will weaken with high pressure that was over the West Coast
moving over the Interior with clearing skies and cooling
temperatures. A strong low moving across the Bering Sea and
Siberia will bring a warming trend to the West Coast Thursday and
Friday along with strong south winds and a mix of precipitation
with potential for blizzard conditions west of the Middle Yukon
Valley and in the Chukchi Sea Region. The storm system will move
into the Western Arctic Thursday night with winds swinging around
from the south.
