Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Persistence, that is the name of the game from Point Hope south
through the Bering Strait to St. Lawrence Island, as strong
northerly flow continues. This will bring areas of snow and
blowing snow throughout the day into tonight from Point Hope
south through the Bering Strait along with elevated surf and heavy
freezing spray to the north shore of St. Lawrence Island over the
next several days, primarily for Savoonga. Gusty east to
northeasterly winds will persist over highway summits in the
Interior through Thursday, producing areas of blowing snow and low
wind chill values. Otherwise, a couple of weather fronts will
lift north over the Alaska Range Thursday and bring areas of snow
to the Central and Eastern Interior into Friday ahead of colder
temperatures that will settle in for the weekend.

.DISCUSSION...
Upper Levels and Analysis...
The current pattern across Northern Alaska consists of a deep
longwave trough at 500 hpa being anchored by a 499 decameter
(dam) low near the Alaska Peninsula. This low will remain quasi-
stationary over the region through the short term. The placement
of this feature will keep the flow aloft northerly across far
Western Alaska for the rest of the week. Elsewhere, a weak
shortwave will rotate and lift north across the Eastern Alaska
Range late tonight, increasing chances of snow in the Eastern
Interior Thursday morning, primarily east of Tanana. A stronger
shortwave will swing north over the same location Thursday
afternoon and north to the Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast by Friday,
bringing additional light snow across the region. The associated
surface features, with low pressure on the eastern peripheral of
the upper level trough and high pressure over the Arctic Ocean, a
tight pressure gradient will remain across the Interior through
Thursday, bringing areas of blowing snow along with low wind chill
values as a cold air mass remains over Northern Alaska.

Model Discussion...
The models are in general agreement on the evolution of features
on the synoptic scale over the next several days. Thus we made
limited changes to the inherited forecast for this afternoon's
forecast package.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Cold temperatures in the 20s to 30s below are still holding on
strong across the region this afternoon, from Umiat east to the
Dalton Highway, and expect these temperatures to persist over the
next several days. Northeasterly to easterly flow will set up
along the Beaufort Coast, with winds in the 10 to 25 mph range,
as a surface high builds over the high Arctic and persists into
the weekend. A Wind Chill Advisory will is in effect for the
Brooks Range beginning tonight, as colder temperatures combined
with northerly winds creates wind chills that will dive into the
50s below, possibly colder, for Anaktuvuk Pass. The next chance
of snow will occur Thursday across portions of the Eastern Brooks
Range and Beaufort Sea Coast, with generally less than an inch of
snow expected.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A persistent north flow of 20 to 30 mph will remain for the
rest of the work week along the West Coast, from Point Hope south
through the Bering Strait to St. Lawrence Island. This will cause
snow showers that develop over open water, impacting the Bering
Strait south to St. Lawrence Island, bringing areas of blowing
snow that will reduce visibility to one half mile or less at
times. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect into Thursday
morning for the Bering Strait Communities, due to snow and
blowing snow. In addition, elevated surf and heavy freezing spray
will remain an issue going into the weekend along the north shore
of St Lawrence Island, primarily for Savoonga. Temperatures are
expected to remain well below normal over the next several days,
with a cooling trend going into the weekend.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Another blue sky day here in Fairbanks this afternoon, with a few
more clouds around the area. A tight gradient will remain in
place across the Interior creating gusty east to northeast winds
over higher elevations and low wind chill values, including
highway summits, through Thursday. A couple of weather fronts will
move across the Alaska Range over the next couple of days,
keeping sky conditions cloudy. The first front will reach the
Southeastern Interior this afternoon, bringing increasing chances
for snow across the Upper Tanana Valley and the Fortymile Country
into tonight. The second front will bring widespread snow across
the Southern Interior as far west as Lake Minchumina beginning
tomorrow afternoon. Light snow will last into Friday as the front
lifts north to the Yukon Flats and then to the Eastern Brooks
Range. Snow accumulations of around one inch is expected with
this event. Temperatures will remain steady with highs in the
single digits to teens below zero during the day and teens to
twenties below zero overnight going into the weekend.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
No concerns at this time.

Extended Forecast for Days 4 through 7...
Beginning the extended period Saturday afternoon, a long wave
trough will continue over Northern Alaska and remain through the
extended period. This will keep the snow chances primarily across
the Eastern Interior and along the capes of Western Alaska, and
through the Bering Strait south to St. Lawrence Island.

...Heavy Freezing Spray At St Lawrence Island This Week...

Residents of Savoonga and others along the North Shore of St
Lawrence Island, should be prepared for ice accumulation on power
lines, buildings and roads this week. Ice accumulation could
damage power lines.

North winds of 20 to 30 mph and temperatures in the teens are
expected to continue through Friday over St Lawrence Island.
These winds, combined with the cold temperatures, will cause
elevated surf and heavy freezing spray to blow inland and freeze
on objects along the North Shore of St Lawrence Island,
especially at Savoonga. Due to the long duration of this storm,
significant ice accumulation may occur.

Snow squalls will continue this week as well, with visibility
reduced at times in snow and blowing snow.
