.SYNOPSIS...
Hold on to your hats, especially at higher elevations across the
Interior, primarily south of the Brooks Range, as gusty east to
northeasterly winds will persist over highway summits into
Thursday, producing areas of blowing snow and low wind chill
values. Elsewhere, persistent northerly winds will continue
through the Bering Strait south to St. Lawrence Island, creating
elevated surf to the north side of St Lawrence Island, along with
possible freezing spray accumulation on surfaces in Savoonga.
Temperatures will remain below normal as they will continue a
downward trend for the remainder of the week.

.DISCUSSION...
Upper Levels and Analysis...
The current pattern across Northern Alaska consists of a deep
longwave trough at 500 hpa being anchored by a 506 decameter
(dam) low over Southwest Alaska. This feature will persist across
the region through the short term, this afternoon into Friday. A
weak shortwave will rotate and lift north across the Eastern
Alaska Range Wednesday morning, increasing chances of snow across
the Eastern Interior by Wednesday afternoon, primarily east of
Fairbanks. Another shortwave will swing north across the same
location, north to the Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast, keeping
chances of light snow through Thursday. The associated surface
features, with low pressure under the trough and to the east along
with high pressure over the North Slope, the pressure gradient
across the Interior will persist into Thursday, bringing low wind
chill values as a cold air mass remains over Northern Alaska.

Model Discussion...
The models are in general agreement on the evolution of features
on the synoptic scale through the short term. The temperatures
will be a challenge due to the cloud cover across Northern Alaska
and the affects that it will have. We made limited changes to the
inherited forecast for this afternoon's forecast package.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Cold temperatures in the 20s to 30s below are still holding on
strong across the region, from Umiat east to the Dalton Highway,
and expect these temperatures to persist over the next several
days. Winds will become northeasterly tonight for coastal
communities along the Beaufort Sea, as a surface high builds over
the high Arctic and persists through Thursday. The next chances of
snow will not occur until Thursday across portions of the Eastern
Brooks Range and Beaufort Sea Coast, with generally less than an
inch of snow expected.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A persistent north flow along the West Coast is expected to cause
freezing spray issues along the northern shores of St. Lawrence
Island throughout the week. North to northeast flow will also
continue inland over the next several days. Snow remains likely
over St. Lawrence Island as the strong northerly flow will
initiate snow showers over the open water from the Bering Strait
south. Temperatures expected to remain well below normal over the
next several days, with a cooling trend going into the weekend.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Blue sky has made a triumphant return to Fairbanks this afternoon
as the clouds have eroded away. The light snow that has been
occuring across the region overnight is confined to areas
primarily north and east of Fairbanks this afternoon. Light snow
chances will linger into Wednesday morning. With a tight gradient
in place across the region, creating gusty east to northeast winds
across higher elevations, Wind Chill Advisories are in effect for
cold wind chills along highway summits into Wednesday morning.
The next chance for snow beyond tonight looks to be Wednesday
afternoon across the Eastern Interior, so higher chances of snow
will be confined to the Upper Tanana Valley and Fortymile Country.
Temperatures are expected to remain below normal with a cooling
trend going into the end of the week.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
No concerns at this time.

Extended Forecast for Days 4 through 7...
Beginning the extended period Friday afternoon, a long wave
trough will continue over Northern Alaska and remain through the
extended period with a slow progression to the southwest of the
anchoring low. This will keep the snow chances primarily across
the Eastern Interior and along the capes of Western Alaska, and
through the Bering Strait south to St. Lawrence Island.
