Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Light snow that has moved through the Fairbanks area overnight
continues to lift to the north this morning. Windy conditions in
the Interior and Brooks Range will persist into this afternoon
with blowing snow and wind chill issues. Temperatures will remain
below normal across northern Alaska through the rest of the week,
with a cooling trend beginning tonight.

.DISCUSSION...
The current pattern across northern Alaska this morning consists
of troughing aloft and a broad area of low pressure at the
surface. These features will generally persist across the region
over the next several days, with the main changes being the colder
Arctic airmass strengthening and digging further south going into
the weekend.

Focusing on the upper levels, the longwave trough lies in a
southwestward orientation across northern Alaska, with a closed
low located over Cook Inlet. This closed low has an associated
shortwave trough currently lifting north of Fairbanks, and is the
source of ongoing light snow north of Fairbanks this morning. This
closed low will remain in the general area over the next couple
of days, with a stronger shortwave lifting north of the Alaska
Range by Wednesday morning. This shortwave will bring the next
round of snow to the Interior, confined east of Fairbanks as
southerly flow shadows out most of the Interior from any snow. A
second shortwave will follow on Thursday, before turning upper
level flow more southeasterly by Friday.

At the surface, general low pressure lies across the state, with
the main low center south of Prince William Sound. This feature,
combined with high pressure over the North Slope is creating a
strong pressure gradient that has caused blowing snow and cold
wind chills over the last couple of days. This gradient is
expected to continue through today before relaxing as these two
features weaken.

A second surface low will move onshore from the Gulf of Alaska,
strengthening the pressure gradient again by tomorrow, with wind
chills a possible issue again as temperatures continue to trend
downward in the Interior. A weather front will move into the
Yukon and increase chances for snow in the southeastern Interior
on Wednesday. A second weather front will move north of the Alaska
Range on Thursday, bringing higher chances further west into
Fairbanks through Thursday night. Models are in decent agreement
on timing, but still differ in how widespread the snow may become
for this second snow event. However, no major issues expected at
this time.

As mentioned, the cold airmass currently over northern Alaska is
expected to persist into the weekend. Models are indicating
deepening of the airmass, leading to colder temperatures that are
expected across the forecast area. However, the cloud cover will
continue to pose a challenge for the forecast, as areas cloud free
may see temperatures in the 30s to 40s below, while clouded areas
will limit low temperatures in the 10s to 20s below.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Light snow continuing for areas north of Fairbanks this morning.
This snow is expected to dissipate throughout the day, with
isolated to slight chances for snow redeveloping overnight
tonight in this similar region. Winter Weather Advisories remain
in effect for the Interior for blowing snow and cold wind chills
along highway summits through this morning. Conditions will
improve as winds diminish slightly, but with colder temperatures
settling into the region, wind chills could become an issue again
beginning tonight. The next chances for snow beyond tonight look
to be on Wednesday evening in the Eastern Interior, but models
still struggle to agree on timing and the western extent of snow
possibilities, so likely chances remain confined to the Upper
Tanana Valley and Forty Mile Country at this time. Temperatures
expected to remain below normal with a cooling trend going into
the end of the week.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through this morning
for the Brooks Range for blowing snow and cold wind chills. Cold
temperatures in the 20s and 30s below have crept the eastern
Arctic Coast this morning, with these conditions expected to
persist over the next several days. Winds will shift to out of the
east by tonight along the North Slope, as surface high pressure
builds into the high Arctic and persists into Thursday. The next
chance for snow not expected until the end of the week, with the
eastern and central Brooks Range the most likely area to see snow.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Persistent northerly flow along the West Coast is expected to
cause freezing spray issues along the northern shores of St.
Lawrence Island throughout the week. North to northeast flow will
also continue inland over the next several days. Snow remains
likely over St. Lawrence Island as the strong northerly flow will
initiate snow showers over the open water from the Bering Strait
south. Temperatures expected to remain well below normal over the
next several days, with a cooling trend going into late week.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
