Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 547 AM AKST Fri Jan 1 2021 .SYNOPSIS... A front associated with a strong low in the southwestern Bering Sea will bring snow, blowing snow and gusty winds to St. Lawrence Island and the Yukon Delta today. Elsewhere along the west coast, gusty easterly winds are expected. The Interior will be relatively quiet today, although there will be breezy easterly winds at times, especially near Delta Junction and over the higher terrain north of Fairbanks. The North Slope will see periods of low stratus and Fog today, areas from Point Lay west will continue to see blowing snow. Much of northern Alaska will see a cooling trend in temperatures over the next 48 hours. && .DISCUSSION... The 01/00 UTC model suite generally initialized well when compared to observational data. The models are in good agreement out through the weekend. We made some minor tweaks to the the short term forecast to adjust timing of the front that is currently moving to the north through the Bering Sea. Aloft, at 500 mb, a ridge currently stretches from southeast to northwest across the forecast area, with the ridge axis along a line from Denali Park to Point Hope. The ridge will be pushed off to the northwest tonight, as a 500 dam low pushes south from the Arctic,. By Sunday, the low will strengthen to 494 dam and will be situated over the central Interior. A 472 dam low is currently over the southwestern Bering Sea. This low will remain quasi- stationary through the weekend before starting to move eastward Monday night. Central and eastern Interior... The pressure gradient will tighten up a bit today over the Interior, causing a few places to see gusty east to northeasterly wind. The strongest winds will be around 35 mph near Delta Junction. Gusty winds are also expected over summits in the northern Interior. A cooling trend in temperatures is expected over the next 48 hours. By early Saturday, we will see temperatures in the 20s below zero and by early Sunday, many locations will fall into the 30s below zero. With the cold temperatures and gusty winds we will have issues with very cold wind chills tonight into Sunday over summits north of Fairbanks. We opted to issue Wind Chill Advisories for zones 219, 220 and 221, all for highway summits. North Slope and Brooks Range... Blowing snow continue along the Chukchi Sea Coast, especially from Point Lay west. A Blizzard Warning remain in effect for this area. Elsewhere, temperatures are expected to drop today into Saturday. By early Saturday, areas along the coast will fall into the 20s below (with areas east of Utqiagvik approaching 30 below), while much of the Arctic Plain will fall into the 30s to 40s below. Temperatures will continue to fall Saturday night and by Sunday morning temperatures along coast will range from the mid 20s to mid 30s below, with much of the Arctic Plain seeing temperatures in the 40s below. Breezy easterly winds along the coast will continue today through tonight resulting in very cold wind chill values. We issued Wind Chill advisories for the Central and Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast (zones 203 and 204) for wind chills of 50 to 55 below zero through Saturday morning. Gusty northerly gap winds will develop in the western Brooks Range by this evening and in the central and eastern Brooks Range by Saturday morning, with the gap winds persisting into Sunday. West Coast and Western Interior... A front associated with a very strong low in the southwestern Bering Sea will continue to move northeast through the Bering today, and will be positioned over St. Lawrence Island and the Yukon Delta on by this afternoon. This will bring snow and blowing snow to both the Yukon Delta and St. Lawrence Island today, with St. Lawrence Island seeing blizzard conditions. A winter weather advisory is out for zone 214 while a Blizzard Warning is out for zone 213. Because the front stalls out, the rest of the west coast and the western Interior will miss out on getting an precipitation with this system, with the main impact being an increase in easterly winds. Gusty northerly winds will develop through the Bering Strait and the Kobuk and Noatak Valleys late Saturday. Temperatures will drop Saturday night, with lows in many spots in the Western Interior falling into the 20s below zero. By Sunday night temperatures in the western Interior will fall into the 30s below. Wind chill values may approach advisory levels in the Kobuk and Noatak Valleys Saturday night and Sunday. Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None. Extended Forecast for Days 4 to 7... Cold temperatures will continue to start the first workweek of the new year, with an upper level low covering much of northern Alaska. By the middle of the week the upper level low will push west over the Bering Sea with much of the forecast area expected to be under southerly flow aloft. The southerly flow will bring a warming trend (back to closer to the climatological normal) for the second half of next week. && .AFG WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
