Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A front continues to move south and east through the Interior and
will usher in much colder temperatures as snow in the Fortymile,
the Deltana Flats, and Upper Tanana Valley as well as the Eastern
Alaska Range diminishes this afternoon. Winds will diminish this
afternoon along the Eastern North Slope and along the Northern
portions of the Seward Peninsula helping to moderate the very cold
wind chill values seen there currently. Well below normal
temperatures will continue into the middle of next week.

.DISCUSSION...
Models...the 19/00z model suite initialized well against the 00z
surface analysis and initialized well against the 06z surface
analysis. Model spread remains minimal in the short range and
increases in the mid range and increases dramatically in the
extended range.

Aloft at 500 hpa, a longwave trough extends southward from the
high Canadian Arctic over Alaska and the Eastern Gulf of Alaska
while a ridge extends north out of the Northern Pacific into the
Eastern Bering Sea. A strong shortwave over Central Alaska
continues to push south and east into the Yukon through Saturday.
A second shortwave currently along 80N will dive south to be over
the North Slope Saturday and over the Interior on Sunday.

At 850 hpa, temperatures around 15 below over Fairbanks this
morning will drop to near 25 below later today and will remain in
the 20 to 30 below range through early next week over much of the
North Slope and Interior. Alternating periods of clouds and
partly cloudy skies with south moving shortwaves will produce
surface temperatures in the 30 to 40 below range over much of the
Interior and North Slope.

At the surface, strong low pressure in the northeast Gulf of
Alaska continues to bring moisture north and west into the Central
and Eastern Interior south and east of a Fort Yukon to Fairbanks
line. Snow is expected to diminish this afternoon in the Fortymile
Country and this evening in the Eastern Alaska Range. An Arctic
boundary continues to push south into the interior and will push
the snow into the Yukon. Much colder temperatures are expected
into early next week with temperatures in the Interior dropping
into the 30 to 40 below range with alternating periods of mostly
clear skies and clouds and flurries as weak shortwaves pass south
and east over the North Slope and Interior.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Increasing cloud cover over the western North Slope has resulted
in warming temperatures across the central and western Arctic
coasts. Light snow and occasional flurries snow will persist into
this evening.  Wind Chill Warnings continuing for the eastern
Arctic coast this morning. Winds will decrease allowing the low
wind chill values to moderate over the Eastern North Slope this
afternoon. Temperatures are expected to remain below
climatological normal over the next couple of days.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Overall quiet weather conditions for the coastal areas for the
short term forecast. Cold wind chill values over the northern
Seward Peninsula are expected to moderate as winds diminish later
this morning. Otherwise, temperatures expected to remain well
below normal going into next week.

Extended Days 4 to 7...A strong cold core low near Banks Island
will dig south and bring in another round of cold temperatures
for portions of the state going into early next week. The extent
to this influence remains to be seen, but could result in another
extended cold outbreak for areas like the North Slope and Brooks
Range.
