Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Periods of rain will continue today and Thursday for the Central
and Eastern Interior while a strong weather front will move to
the Chukchi Sea Wednesday night spreading a mix or rain and snow
to the northwest mainland, Brooks Range, and the Arctic Thursday,
then into the Interior Thursday and Thursday night. Snow will fall
above 1000 feet in the Western Brooks Range, and by the time it
gets to the Interior expect snow during the nighttime hours above
2000 feet.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

Models...the 25/00 UTC models suite initialized well against the
00 UTC surface analysis and verified well against the 06 UTC
surface analysis. The models remain in goof agreement in the
short term as well as the mid range depicting a sharp arctic
trough digging south and east over mainland Alaska through the
weekend. Long range models show a continuing trend of below normal
temperatures and a moist pattern over Northern Alaska.

Aloft at 500 hpa, a 504 dam low near 80N and the dateline anchors
a longwave trough over western Alaska that will deepen and dig
south pushing into the the Northern Gulf of Alaska by Thursday
with a secondary upper level low developing over the Eastern
Aleutians. By Friday afternoon the anchoring upper level low near
80N and the dateline deepens to 502 dam with a secondary upper
level pushing east through the Western Interior into the Central
Interior and a 3rd upper level low pushing east through the
Northern Gulf of Alaska. This 3rd upper level low becomes cut off
in the Northeastern Gulf of Alaska on Saturday as the entire
longwave becomes negative tilted Saturday. A chilly for August
airmass pushes south and east over the state with 850 mb
temperatures over the North Slope dropping to around minus 10
celsius by Friday and 850 mb temperatures over Fairbanks dropping
from around 4 above celsius this afternoon to around 4 below
celsius by Friday.

On the surface, low pressure troughing will continue over the
Interior as several waves of rain push through the area. A 994 mb
low currently near Wrangel Island will deepen to 986 mb as it
moves east to near Point Barrow Thursday morning. A strong cold
front extending south of the low will push over the Northwest
Coast Wednesday night, the West Coast Thursday morning and into
the Western Interior and Brooks Range Thursday. A secondary low
around 1000 mb pushes east out of Kotzebue Sound Thursday evening
and drags the strong front eastward through the Central and
Eastern Interior Thursday night and Friday. Snow levels drop
rapidly to the surface in the western Brooks Range and
to around 1000 feet in the northwestern Interior Thursday night
and Friday and will drop to around 2000 feet over the Central and
Eastern Interior by Friday. Significant accumulating snow remains
possible in the Brooks Range. Will continue to monitor for
possibility for accumulating snow at pass level in the Alaska
Range as well as along Denali National Park road Thursday night
and Friday.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Areas of dense fog continue this
morning along the Coast to the West of Point Barrow, otherwise
cloudy conditions for most locations with patchy fog and some
flurries or sprinkles today. Late tonight, a weather front will
move to the Northwest Arctic Coast spreading a mix or rain and
snow or just snow to the area with accumulating snow in the Brooks
Range above 1000 feet. Southwest winds in the 15 to 25 mph range
late tonight will switch to the west and increase to 20 to 30 mph
on Thursday and will continue into Friday. Expect elevated surf
along he Chukchi Sea Coast from Point Hope to Utqiagvik Thursday
and Friday with water levels of 1 to 2 feet above the normal high
tide line.

West Coast and Western Interior...Showers will continue in the
inland areas today and will taper off by late in the evening. A
strong cold front will move to the Chukchi Sea coast Wednesday
night or early Thursday morning spreading showers back into the
area. Temperatures will be cooling rapidly with this next system
and a mix of rain and snow will be possible with accumulation snow
falling above 1000 feet from the Seward Peninsula north. No
significant accumulations are expected. Winds in the Chuckchi Sea
coastal areas and through the Bering Strait 15 to 25 mph gusting
to 35 mph. Southwest winds in the 15 to 30 mph range late tonight
will switch to the Northwest and increase to 20 to 35 mph on
Thursday and will continue into Friday. Expect water levels of 1
to 2 feet above the normal high tide line Thursday and Friday
along the Chukchi Sea Coast and Kotzebue Sound Coast from Point
Hope to Shishmaref.

Central and Eastern Interior...Occasional rain, patchy fog, and
cooler temperatures through the rest of the week with a short
break possible this evening through Thursday late morning before
the next system moves into the area spreading bringing more rain.
Low temperatures in the mid 30s to lower 40s in most areas through
Thursday with highs in the 50s. Winds variable to 10 mph. A front
moving in from the northwest, Thursday night and Friday, will
bring a mix of rain and snow or just snow to areas above 2000 feet
in the Interior with accumulating snow possible in the White
Mountains, Alaska Range, and Fortymile Country.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
Elevated Surf along he Chukchi Sea Coast and Kotzebue Sound Coast
from Point Hope to Shishmaref Thursday and Friday...

Water levels of 1 to 2 feet above the normal high tide line are
possible Thursday and Friday along the Chukchi Sea Coast and
Kotzebue Sound Coast from Point Hope to Shishmaref.

Southwest winds in the 15 to 30 mph range late tonight will
switch to the Northwest and increase to 20 to 35 mph on Thursday
and will continue into Friday.

Wave action is expected to wash to the top of the beach so
residents should secure items by moving them away from the beach.

...Snow at higher elevations later this week...

A strong cold front will move into the Interior Thursday night and
Friday with accumulating snow falling above 2000 ft.

The hill tops around Fairbanks including Murphy Dome, Ester Dome,
and Cleary Summit could see a dusting of snow, while the White
and Ray Mountains, Fortymile Country, and the Alaska Range will
get some accumulating snow with up to 4 inches of accumulation.
The snow is expected to melt this weekend.

A mix of rain and snow is expected at lower elevations with no
accumulation.

Utqiagvik Thursday and Friday...

Water levels of 1 to 2 feet above the normal high tide line are
possible Thursday and Friday along the Chukchi Sea Coast from
Point Hope to Utqiagvik.

Southwest winds in the 15 to 25 mph range late tonight will
switch to the west and increase to 20 to 30 mph on Thursday and
will continue into Friday.

Wave action is expected to wash to the top of the beach so
residents should secure items by moving them away from the beach.
