stretching from Point Hope west will move south to the Bering
Strait by 4am Wed, and to the Yukon Delta by 4am Thu.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Typical August weather pattern establishes itself over Northern
Alaska as cooler and wetter weather will continue over the next
several days as periodic fronts/lows move inland from the Pacific.
The next front in a series of fronts will push into the Southern
Interior later this afternoon and will stall along a Eagle to
Fairbanks to Tanana to Huslia line and will produce wetting rains
over mush of the Interior to the south of the Yukon River through
Monday night. A cold upper level trough will push south and east
on the the Northwest Coast next week and will bring cooler
temperatures to much of Northern Alaska.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
Upper levels and Analysis...
A large upper low over the Bering Sea and Chukchi Sea pushes east
into southwest and northwest Alaska through Tuesday. An arctic
trough over the interior of the North Slope and Canadian Maritimes
will slowly migrate east and will continue to bring northerly onshore
flow for the North Slope. The onshore flow will continue to bring
low ceilings and fog for most of the North Slope. A 700 hpa low
pressures system currently in the northwestern Gulf of Alaska
will push northeast tonight and into the Southeast Interior and
Yukon through Monday night and into Tuesday morning. Southerly
flow ahead of the low will briefly limit rainfall along and near
the Alaska Range, however as the flow turns northerly behind the
low over the Eastern Alaska Range and as the flow turns west and
then southwest behind the low expect the wetting rains to continue
into Monday night. Best chance for wetting rains remains areas
south of the Yukon River as a deformation zone sets up over the
Interior just north of Fairbanks. 0.25 to 1.00 inches of rain are
expected along this deformation zone stretching from near Galena
to Fairbanks to Eagle through Monday night.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Showers and rain will continue into Monday evening as a low in
the Gulf of Alaska sends a strong frontal zone into the Interior.
Some locally moderate rainfall is possible from the Tanana Valley
to the White Mountains to the Fortymile Uplands. Generally 0.50
to 1.00 inches of rain is expected in these areas trough Monday
night. Cool showery conditions are expected for the rest of the
week which is a normal August pattern as Pacific moisture streams
into the area. There will also be some south winds through the
Alaska Range through this evening and this will take a significant
"bite" out of overall precipitation totals closer to the AK
Range this afternoon, however as the upper level low pushes east
into the Yukon tonight, and upper and mid level winds turn
northerly expect rainfall rates to pick up along the north slopes
of the Eastern Alaska Range with enhanced upslope flow tonight and
into Monday morning. The rain will diminish Monday afternoon.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A front rotating around an upper level low moving northeast out
of the Northwestern Gulf of Alaska continues to bring rain to the
Lower Yukon and Western Interior this evening. Expect 0.25 to
0.75 inches of rain to fall as this second front stalls out over
the area through Monday. Expect 20-30 knot north winds through the
the Bering Strait which will impact the Capes and Saint Lawrence
as a low passes to the south of the area.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Fog and stratus will continue into this evening and through early
in the the week as winds behind the trough have turned onshore
for most locations. Temps will remain on the cooler side with high
temperatures in the 30's and 40's along the coast and to near 50
inland.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Cool wet and cloudy conditions for all of the interior for the
next several days, with the best shot for significant wetting
rains coming tonight and Monday south of a line from Fort Yukon
to Huslia. This front will shift east and leave showers and clouds
and cool conditions well into the extend range.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...
Expect rises on the Tanana and Chena Rivers as well as other
smaller bodies of water around Fairbanks into early next week as
0.5-1.25" of rainfall will fall over the Tanana Basin. We will
continue to monitor, but not expecting any significant impacts
given the current predicted rainfall. Otherwise, no other hydro
issues of concern.
