Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 231 PM AKDT Wed Aug 4 2021 .SYNOPSIS... Another hot day across the Interior, with record heat out on the West Coast this afternoon. Hot conditions with temperatures reaching the low 80's continuing tomorrow in the Central and Eastern Interior before a sharp cool down going into the weekend with increasing clouds and chances for rain. && .DISCUSSION... In the upper levels, it looks like the ridging pattern that has caused record August heat will hold on across the state through tomorrow before a transition period commences. This ridge will slowly drift to the northwest off into the Chukchi Sea tonight as a strong closed upper level low system in the Bering Sea and a second closed upper level low system near Banks Island merge to pinch the ridge out of the central and western portions of Alaska by Friday morning. Weak ridging will persist in the eastern Interior going into the weekend. The overall trends with this pattern will keep widespread hot conditions for this afternoon and evening. The West Coast and portions of the Western Interior will cool significantly tomorrow as increasing clouds and chances for rain move into the region associated with the Bering Sea upper level low. Hot conditions will persist in the Central and Eastern Interior tomorrow as ridging holds on for another day. As the upper level low from the Beaufort Sea drops further south, surface low pressure will develop in the Interior tomorrow night, ushering in increasing clouds and chances for precipitation that will result in a cooling trend going through the weekend. Central and Eastern Interior... Hot temperatures again today and tomorrow, but looks to be a cooling trend going into the weekend. Increasing chances for rain as low pressure settles into the area beginning on Friday. Isolated thunderstorms possible tomorrow across the southern Interior. Easterly flow associated with these hot conditions will become westerly as low pressure develops south of the Brooks Range by tomorrow night. North Slope and Brooks Range... Marine layer stratus and fog have dissipated this afternoon, but the return of stratus and fog expected to redevelop overnight as easterly flow continues over the next several days. A weather front will drop down from the eastern Beaufort Sea, bringing a chance for precipitation along the coast and eventually into the Brooks Range. This front will usher in cooler temperatures to below normal by Friday. West Coast and Western Interior... Record heat has moved to the western part of the state today. A sharp cooldown will take place tomorrow as a weak front will move northeast across the Yukon Delta and portions of Norton Sound, bringing increasing clouds and chances for rain over the next several days. Thunderstorms will be limited to portions of the Yukon Delta today, with the Middle Yukon and Upper Kuskokwim Valley being the focal point for isolated thunderstorms tomorrow. Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None. && .FIRE WEATHER... Strong high pressure continues to bring hot temperatures across the Interior, with the West Coast joining in with record heat today. Hot conditions continuing at least for the Interior again tomorrow ahead of a cooling trend as low pressure will move into the Interior on Friday, bringing increasing chances for rain going into the weekend. Thunderstorm chances remain limited to the Yukon Delta region today as a weak front moves into the area, with isolated thunderstorms across the southern Interior tomorrow. && .HYDROLOGY... An SPS remains in effect for the Kobuk and Noatak Rivers as water remains elevated in those rivers. However, water levels are expected to drop as water continues to flow downstream. All other rivers out west pose no issues as they have all had dropping water levels over the day or two.
