Island with the front extending N across the Gulf of Anadyr and
NE across the Chukchi Sea. Strong S flow across the area will

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...The rain will continue over western areas and spread
into the Central Brooks Range tonight. Heavy rains in the Central
Brooks Range, Koyukuk River Basin, and Kobuk River Basin will
produce some flooding so Flood Watches and Advisories are in
effect. Heaviest rainfall will be over the southern Seward
Peninsula across the Middle Yukon River Valley to the Upper
Koyukuk, and Upper Kobuk Basins, and along the south slopes of
the Central Brooks Range. Rainfall amounts through Sunday of 2 to
6 inches with the heaviest amounts along the Brooks Range. From
Livengood southeast drying and warming with decreasing clouds
Saturday.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

Models...30/12Z solutions are in good agreement through the
midrange and have come together in the extended periods. They
struggle with timing of the precipitation events moving into the
West Coast and Central Interior, but they show similar amounts of
rainfall. Surface initialized well against local 30/15Z analysis
with the forecast lows about 2 mb weaker than the analysis. Once
again will be leaning quite a bit on the current forecast grids to
maintain continuity.

Aloft...At 500 hpa...Troughing remains across the Northern
Arctic, while troughing has pushed north over the Western Arctic
with a 541 dam low 200 northeast of Wrangel Island, a 540 dam low
just east of Wrangel Island, a 541 dam low over the Northeast Gulf
of Anadyr, and a 541 dam low over the Dateline near 60N. Strong
southwest flow, mainly north of the Alaska Range, continues over
the state. Weak ridging holding on over the Southeast Interior and
extending southwest to a 573 dam high over the Copper River Basin
to a 573 dam high over Lake Illiamna then south over 160W.
Saturday morning will not bring little change to the overall
pattern, with the exception of southwest flow increasing as the
low over the Dateline moves over St Lawrence Island at 537 dam as
troughing remains over the Chukotsk Peninsula and the Western
Arctic. Saturday afternoon the low will be over the Chukchi Sea as
the lows merge into a single 539 dam low. Sunday morning sees no
change in the strong southwest flow as the low moves to 100 nm
north of Point Lay at 541 dam with little change in the ridging to
the south. Sunday the ridging pushes north to the Yukon River in
the afternoon and flow turns more from the west late Sunday. At
850 hpa...No change from yesterday as a dome of +10C or warmer
will persist over the far Southeast Interior while the 0C isotherm
will move over the Northwest Arctic Coast with the remainder of
the forecast area somewhere in between.

Surface...Low pressure west and north of Livengood with weak high
pressure in the Southeast Interior and south of the Alaska Range.
Low pressure to the west is anchored by a 1003 mb low in the
Southwest Arctic, and a 992 mb low that has moved to the Dateline
near 60N. Little change is expected by Saturday afternoon in the
overall pattern, as the low near the Dateline moves into the
Chukchi Sea and merges with the low that was in the Southwest
Arctic at 992 mb. A 1014 mb high will move into the Southeast
Interior. By Sunday morning high pressure will push north to the
Yukon River as the low in the Chukchi Sea moves into the Arctic
100 nm north of Utqiagvik.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Just not seeing much change as
cloudy conditions prevail with showers and areas of fog. Inland
downslope off the Brooks Range will keep most areas dry, but
cloudy. Highs in the mid 40s to mid 50s, with lows in the 40s for
most locations along the coast. Warmer inland with highs in the
upper 50s to mid 60s. Winds southeast 5 to 15 mph becoming
southwest by Sunday morning in most areas.

West Coast and Western Interior...Rain, followed by more rain.
Flood Watches and Advisories in effect for the area. 2 to 6
inches of rain through Sunday with the heaviest amounts on the
Southern Seward Peninsula, Nulato Hills, and along the south
slopes of the Brooks Range. Highs along the coast mid 40s to mid
50s, while inland highs will be in the upper 50s to lower 60s.
Lows will be in the 40s to mid 50s. Winds southeast to southwest
at 5 to 20 mph.

Central and Eastern Interior...Partly cloudy to the southeast of
Fairbanks with cloudy conditions from Fairbanks northwest. Heavy
rain expected in the Koyukuk Basin so Flood Advisory has been
issued for small streams and creeks. Winds southeast to southwest
to 10 mph. High in the 60s and 70s, and lows in the 50s.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...Still looks like a return to
summer like weather and temperatures for the Central and Eastern
Interior, while the West Coast and Arctic will stay in a south to
southwest flow with cloudy conditions and showers.

.Fire Weather...Interior locations southeast of a line from Fort
Yukon to Fairbanks to Denali will be drying out, while areas to
the west and north will remain cloudy, cool, and wet as another
weather system pushes rain into the area through Saturday.
High temperatures will range from the 50s in the west to the 70s
in the Southeast Interior. Overnight lows generally in the 50s.
Minimum Relative Humidity will be lowest in the Upper Yukon Flats
as it falls into the mid 30s, and will range up to the mid 50s in
the Middle Yukon Valley. Winds southeast to southwest at 5 to 20
mph. Winds gusting around 30 mph west of Tanana. Relative
Humidity recovery will be good.

.Hydrology...Flood Advisory for Nome and Snake Rivers extended
into Sunday as another 1 to 3 inches of rain is expected through
Monday. Most river levels west and north of Fairbanks are
falling, but will level off or rise the next couple days. 2 to 6
inches of rain expected in the Upper Kobuk and Koyukuk Basins will
bring bankfull to minor flood conditions to streams and creeks
in the area so a Flood Advisory for small streams and creeks is in
effect for those basins. Water levels in small stream and creeks
in the Interior southeast of Livengood have leveled off and will
