Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure building across the mainland Alaska will bring
generally dry and warm conditions to much of the state the next
couple of days. A weather front over the high Arctic will dive
southward and impact the eastern half of state starting with the
Arctic coast Monday night and reaching the Alaska Range on
Wednesday. This will bring increasing clouds, precipitation, and
winds, while the west coast and western Interior remain under high
pressure and dry conditions.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
Models are in good agreement with the large scale synoptic
features. A closed upper level low near Kodiak Island will slowly
drift to the northeast Gulf of Alaska by Wednesday, as a vigorous
upper level low located near 80N will push south into NW Canada.
High pressure will dominate the west coast and eastern Bering Sea
into mid-week.

The remnants of the weather front that moved into the
northwest Arctic coast and west coast last night is fizzling out
as it moves southeast across the Interior. Other than some showers
over the Yukon Delta, all that remains of this feature are some
mid and high level clouds draped across the Interior. Monday looks
to be quite a nice day across almost all of the forecast area
with high pressure over the state. As mentioned above, the weather
front over the high Arctic pushes into the North Slope from Utqiagvik
east Monday night, across the Brooks Range Tuesday, and to the
Alaska Range on Wednesday. This is quite a dynamic feature and we
are expecting showers and embedded thunderstorms along the front
when it cross the eastern Brooks Range and moves into the
Interior.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Partly cloudy skies with fog along
the coast tonight and Monday. Westerly winds will pick up on
Monday as a weather front approaches the coast from the north. On
Monday evening winds will shift to the northwest and precipitation
will move into the coast from Utqiagvik eastward and to the Brooks
Range on Tuesday. On Monday, temperatures will warm into the 70's
over the inland areas of the North Slope with 50's and 60's along
the immediate coast.

West Coast and Western Interior...Relatively quiet and dry the
next several days. A few lingering showers over the Yukon Delta
will taper off this evening, otherwise clearing skies and warm
conditions through at least mid-week. Coastal areas will
experience areas of fog, which may be dense at times especially
along the Bering Strait and over St. Lawerence Island. Small craft
winds developing from the Bering Strait and across the western
Chukchi Sea tonight will diminish on Tuesday. Inland temperatures
will climb into the 70's with mainly 60's and 50's on the coast.

Central and Eastern Interior...A few isolated thunderstorms
possible through early this evening over the northeastern Brooks
Range. Otherwise, mostly clear skies with light and variable
winds tonight and Monday. Warming temperatures as high pressure
strengthens with readings peaking on Tuesday in the upper 70's to
lower 80's, with the warmest temperatures in the Yukon Flats.
Southwest winds will increase on Tuesday as a weather front
crosses the Brooks Range. Thunderstorms are possible in the
Brooks Range Tuesday and over the central and eastern Interior on
Wednesday, along with cooling temperatures and showers.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
None.

.FIRE WEATHER...There is a slight chance of some isolated
thunderstorms in the northeastern Brooks Range through early
evening. Otherwise, a warming and drying trend is the theme for
the next few days with temperatures peaking in the upper 70's and
lower 80's on Tuesday. Minimum relatively humidities will fall
into the 20's percent over the eastern Interior with a large area
across the Brooks Range and central Interior in the 30's percent.
The front approaching from the north on Tuesday is going to
increase southwesterly winds over the central and eastern Interior
and may impact the active fires in the region during the peak
of the heat and lower relative humidities. As this front moves
southward Tuesday night and Wednesday, thunderstorms are possible
along the front and due to the dynamics of the system, may persist
through the overnight hours. Wednesday will bring cooler
temperatures, precipitation, and higher relative humidity.
