.SYNOPSIS FOR NORTHWEST COAST...
A ridge of high pressure that extends from a 1035 mb high near
Adak to a 1025 mb high over the Chukotsk Peninsula to a 1025 mb
high north of Wrangel Island will slowly slide E. The ridge will
lie along 170W late this evening and will move over the West Coast
Sun morning and inland by Sun afternoon. A strong 963 mb low will
move into the Western Bering Sea Sun and across the Northern
Bering Sea to St Lawrence Island by Tue.

High pressure extends from the Central Aleutians through the
Bering Strait to a 1028 mb high in the Arctic and will move over
mainland Alaska tonight as the remnants of Typhoon Mindulle move 
into the Western Bering Sea at 963 mb. The remnants will continue
E across the Northern Bering Sea with a weather front moving to
the West Coast early Mon morning, and the low moving to the
Dateline Tue morning at 974 mb. The low will slowly weaken as it 
continues E to St Lawrence Island Wed morning.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories
for the Eastern Arctic, and the Central and Eastern Interior are
in effect into Sunday for heavy snow accumulation. Go to
www.weather.gov/fairbanks for details. A strong low in the Gulf of
Alaska will send a weather front into the Interior today, and
another into the Interior on Saturday. Travel will be difficult
from Fairbanks south through the Alaska Range, along the Alaska
Highway, and on the Steese Highway. Strong north winds along the
West Coast will produce some ocean effect snow along the coast
with cloudy conditions in the inland areas. In the Arctic strong
onshore flow will produce ocean effect snow as well with enhanced
snowfall in the eastern areas in the Brooks Range.

.DISCUSSION...

Models...The 01/00Z solutions have come into much better
agreement in the short term details. In the midrange and extended
periods solutions are still struggling, and will most likely
continue to as they don't generally handle decaying extratropical
systems well. Solutions initialized well against the 01/12Z upper
air flights, and at the surface the solutions were within a couple
millibars for the major features when compared to the 01/06Z
local analysis. No significant differences in the 850 hpa
temperatures today. Will be using a general blend of the solutions
for most elements today which will provide good continuity with
the previous forecast. Going to kick the probabilities up using
the SREF to ensure categorical snow in the Central and Eastern
Interior and Arctic.

Aloft...At 500 hpa...Broad troughing remains over the state
extending north over the Arctic. A 516 dam low is over Galena with
a 511 dam low just south of the Kenai Peninsula, and a 518 dam
low 200 nm south of Kodiak Island. Ridging has moved over the
Western Bering Sea and continues to push over the Western Arctic.
Weak ridging is also pushing west over the Southern Beaufort Sea.
By this afternoon the low over Galena will drift west and weaken
while a 516 dam low will develop and move over King Salmon. The
low near the Kenai Peninsula will drift east as heights rise to
514 dam, and the low south of Kodiak Island will move to 300 nm
south of Yakutat. As the low in the northern Gulf of Alaska moves
east a shortwave moving around it will moves west over the Eastern
and Central Interior stalling and decaying as it moves west of
Fairbanks later tonight. Saturday morning a 523 dam low will be
over Norton Sound with a trough extending north to the Central
Arctic. The low in the Northern Gulf of Alaska will drift over
Prince William Sound at 516 dam with the stalled decaying trough
extending north over Manley Hot Springs to Coldfoot to Kaktovik.
The low that was south of Yakutat will move over Yakutat at 519
dam. Saturday afternoon the trough over the interior will
dissipate as the low over Prince William Sounds drifts southwest
and weakens to 520 dam. the low over Yakutat will move over the
Yukon Territory. Strong upslope flow will develop over the north
slopes of the Eastern and Central Alaska Range, and the Fortymile
country as the low persists, but weakens, through Sunday morning.
Ridging over the Western Bering Sea will move to the Dateline by
Sunday morning, and over the Bering Strait and West Coast Monday
morning. At 850 hpa...Temperatures range from 0C to -11C with the
warmest temperatures over the Southeast Interior and the coldest
generally west of Fairbanks and over the Western Arctic.
Temperatures will warm slightly through the middle of next week.

Surface...Low pressure continues to dominate the forecast area
with a 979 mb low in the Northern Gulf of Alaska, a 986 mb low 300
nm south of Kodiak Island, and a 987 mb low has developed along a
weather front and moved into the Upper Tanana Valley near the
AlCan Border crossing. A 1000 mb low has moved to the Northern
Beaufort Sea. High pressure extends from the Western Bering Sea to
the Siberian Arctic with a 1030 mb high near Kiska Island and a
1025 mb high 200 nm northwest of Wrangel Island. By this afternoon
the weather front in the southeast Interior will move west to the
Fairbanks area spreading snow to the area, and will continue to
the west then stall in the vicinity of Tanana and eventually
dissipate. By Saturday morning the low in the Gulf will move to
Yakutat at 976 mb as a low moves into the Yukon Territory at 985
mb. The high pressure to the west will move to the Dateline with a
1034 mb high near Adak, and a 1026 mb high 300 nm northeast of
Wrangel Island. A second front will be moving around the low near
Yakutat and will spread heavy snow to the Southeast Interior as
upslope flow develops along the north slopes of the Eastern and
Central Alaska Range.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Winter Storm Warnings for the
Eastern area as snow develops and becomes heavy at times with
accumulations of 4 to 12 inches. Remainder of the are will remain
mostly cloudy with some light snow or flurries with accumulations
less than 3 inches. Northeast to east winds will persist at 10 to
30 mph with areas of blowing snow east of Utqiagvik reducing
visibility to one mile or less. Highs in the 30s, lows in the 20s.

West Coast and Western Interior...Strong north to northeast winds
at 109 to 35 mph from the Upper Kobuk west and the Nulato Hills
west. Strongest winds will be on the capes. Elevated surf from
Cape Espenberg to the Bering Strait, on St Lawrence Island, and
west of Stebbins to Cape Romanzof. Expect wave runup to, or
slightly above, the Normal High Tide Line. A mix of sun and clouds
across the area with some flurries or light snow showers along
the coast as ocean effect snow showers develop with the cold air
being pulled south over the open water in the area. Locally up to
2 inches of snow is possible on and near the capes. Inland a mix
of clouds and sun. Winds inland much lighter at 5 to 10 mph. Highs
in the 30s and lows in the 20s and will be slowly cooling through
the weekend.

Central and Eastern Interior...Winter Storm Warnings and Winter
Weather Advisories are in effect for areas from Fairbanks south
and east today into Sunday. First of a couple front will move
moving through the area today eventually stalling west of
Fairbanks later tonight as it weakens and eventually dissipates.
Snow developing to the southeast and moving into the Fairbanks
area around noon today will taper off from the southeast late this
evening. Snow accumulations today will be in the 2 to 4 inch
range. Another front moving into the southeast Interior early
Saturday morning will bring heavy snow to the area and it will
spread west into the Interior. Snow will eventually taper off by
Sunday afternoon. Heaviest snow will be to the southeast of
Fairbanks along the Alaska Highway and in the Eastern Alaska
Range. Snowfall amounts through Sunday will range from around 3
inches at Livengood and 4 inches at Minchumina, to 4 to 6 inches
in the Fairbanks area and east to Eagle, to 6 to 12 inches from
Nenana south and Birch Lake southeast to the Border. Temperatures
fairly steady with highs in the mid 30s and lows in the 20s.
Slight warmer to start next week.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...A strong low will be
moving across the Bering Sea with increasing winds and potential
for elevated surf on south and southwest facing shorelines from
the Bering Strait south Monday into Wednesday.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...High pressure moving over
most of the forecast area by Sunday afternoon with clearing skies.
A decaying extra tropical low will be moving across the Bering
Sea sending a weather front to the coast Monday with a mix of rain
and snow along the coast by late Monday. The rain and snow will
move into the Western Interior Tuesday with showers lingering in
the western areas into Thursday before tapering off. Offshore flow
to start the week in the Arctic turning onshore by late in the
week. The Interior east of Galena will generally be partly cloudy
as high pressure hangs on in the area.
