Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
An active and wet early summer weather pattern will continue for
the next several days over the Western Interior, West Coast and
North Slope while dry off shore flow will continue along the West
Coast and Bering Strait. Near normal temperatures today and
wednesday will cool to below normal as a cold upper level trough
pushes east through Northern Alaska.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
The long wave pattern consists of a trough over the Beaufort Sea
south over Western Alaska into the Bering Sea and Western Gulf of
Alaska, and a ridge over the Eastern Pacific and Western Canada.
This pattern will progress slowly east with the trough moving over
Mainland Alaska and the Gulf of Alaska late this week. This will
keep showery conditions over the Interior and North Slope along
with seasonal temperatures through mid-week then cooling by the
end of the week. The West Coast will remain mainly dry and cooler
than normal. On the surface, High pressure north of the Arctic Coast
of Alaska and along the Dateline will weaken slowly Wed into Thu.
This will continue to cause stratus and areas of fog along the
Arctic Coast and the Bering Strait that will persist into Thu.
This combined with a low pressure in the northwest Interior will
cause north winds 25-35 kt from Point Hope to St Lawrence Is that
will decrease slowly on Wed. A thermal low pressure trough that
lies from McGrath to Nenana to Northway will persist into Thu and
will produce very isolated thunderstorms as moisture streams in
form the Eastern and Central Interior.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Expect numerous showers and isolated thunderstorms over the
Central Interior north and west of Fairbanks while isolated
showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected late this
afternoon and early evening in the Central Interior south and east
of Fairbanks as well as the Eastern Interior as a front currently
over the Central Interior continues to push north and west. The
front will continue to push north west into the western Interior
bringing wetting rains to most of the Western Interior. Gusty
southerly gap winds that developed this morning will continue
through late this evening along and near the Alaska Range passes
where a Wind Advisory remains in effect for the Eastern Alaska
Range for wind gusts to 55 mph. Snow has developed mostly above
3000 feet in the Brooks Range as moisture continues to push into
the area. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect above 30000
feet in the Brooks Range through Wednesday morning where where 3
to 5 inches of snow is expected in Atigun Pass. Wednesday will be
a dryer day over the Eastern Interior as a weak ridge builds back
in with mostly afternoon mountain showers and possibly an isolated
thunderstorm.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Another very nice day on the West Coast with drying off shore
winds, however wetting rains will be moving into the Western
Interior this afternoon and continue through Wednesday. Isolated
thunderstorms are possible along a line from near Tanana to
McGrath this afternoon and early evening before heavier rain moves
into the area. Storm total rainfall of one half inch to a inch is
possible just east of the Nulato Hills from near Marshall
northward to near Ambler and eastward to near Tanana tonight
through Wednesday. Showers will push west on the the West Coast on
Wednesday especially north of the Seward Peninsula.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Broad low level northerly to northeasterly flow associated with
an broad area of high pressure north of the coast will persist
through Thursday, keeping onshore flow and stratus/flurries in
place. The lone exception will be the west Arctic Coast where
strong northeast winds will be in place as a low in the northwest
Interior continues to push slowly west. Snow level in the Eastern
Brooks Range will remain around 3000 feet with 3 to 5 inches of
snow expected near Atigun Pass through Wednesday morning.
Snow levels in the Western Brooks Range currently near the
surface to around 2000 feet will rise slowly over the next couple
of days with 1 to 2 inches of snow expected above 1800 feet as a
low in the Western Interior continues to push to the north and
west.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Wetting rain most areas this afternoon and tonight for the Central
Interior, and over the Western Interior tonight through Thu. RH
remaining above 30% most areas into and Wed. Isolated PM
wet thunderstorms along a arc extending from near McGrath to
Fairbanks to near Eagle. South winds gusting 55 mph from Black
Rapids to Donnelly Dome into this evening.

.HYDROLOGY...
Break up proceeding across the North Slope and coastal areas will
need to remain vigilant for possible ice jams. River south of the
Brooks Range remain low but will rise this week with added rain.
