Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 227 PM AKDT Sun Sep 12 2021 .SYNOPSIS... Fairly quiet weather pattern as we go into the work week across northern Alaska. Dense fog remains along the Arctic Coast, with redevelopment expected again tonight. Wind advisories remain in effect for Alaska Range passes with gusts to 60 mph expected into tomorrow afternoon. Otherwise, mostly clear conditions in the Interior through tonight, while cloudy and wet conditions continue out west. && .DISCUSSION... In the upper levels, longwave troughing out west and ridging along the eastern portion of the state consists of the pattern this afternoon. The longwave trough is bringing southerly flow across northern Alaska, resulting in dry conditions north of the Alaska Range. As the trough digs further east, southerly flow will begin to subside tomorrow morning. Increasing clouds will creep into the Interior by this point. The longwave trough will become more zonal in nature and centered over the West Coast by tomorrow night as ridging gets pushed to the east of the AlCan border. This troughing pattern will persist over the state going into the middle of the week. Much like the upper levels, low pressure will be the main feature of note across northern Alaska going into the middle of the week. A front is situated across the West Coast this afternoon, resulting in areas of precipitation from the Seward Peninsula south. Pressure will continue to fall across the Interior as the surface low center meanders to the Yukon Delta region by tomorrow night. A weather front associated with this low will lift north of the Alaska Range during this time, bringing increasing easterly flow and chances of precipitation north and east of Fairbanks tomorrow night and into Tuesday. Central and Eastern Interior... Mostly clear conditions across most of the area this afternoon. Increasing clouds expected tonight, with breaks in clouds north of the Alaska Range due to southerly flow. As a result of the southerly flow, winds through Alaska Range Passes will increase throughout this evening, with advisory level winds gusting to 60 mph into tomorrow afternoon. Conditions will remain dry for most of the Interior, with the exception of the Fortymile Country tomorrow afternoon and evening as a remnants of a front spread north of the Alaska Range. Even though we're into mid-September, the weather pattern is favorable for an isolated thunderstorm or two for Monday and Tuesday west of Fairbanks. Temperatures remaining relatively mild the next couple days, but daily highs will be decreasing going into mid- week. North Slope and Brooks Range... Foggy conditions will persist along the Arctic Coast, with dense fog along the Beaufort Sea Coast into tomorrow afternoon. Persistent easterly flow will continue into mid-week, with fog issues expected to accompany this pattern over the next several days. Temperatures expected to remain near climatological normal going into the middle of the week. West Coast and Western Interior... Cool, cloudy, and wet conditions will be the story over the next several days. A surface low pressure will move over the Yukon Delta tomorrow, creating conditions favorable for isolated thunderstorm activity in this general region for tomorrow. Otherwise, impactful weather will remain limited, as rain total over the next several days should range from one quarter inch north of the Nulato Hills and one inch in the Yukon Delta region. Due to these cloudy and wet conditions, temperatures will remain around normal. Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None. && .HYDROLOGY...
