Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Alaska Range southerly winds continuing this afternoon with gusts
to 30 mph. These winds are expected to dissipate through this
evening. Isolated showers in the Interior west and north of
Fairbanks, while the North Slope is seeing a return to low stratus
and fog after a couple of days with warm weather. The West Coast
and Western Interior looks to remain wet and cool going into the
weekend.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
In the upper levels, a longwave trough is situated across the
Bering Sea and southeast into the Gulf of Alaska. There are closed
lows in the western Bering as well as in the Gulf of Alaska.
The current ridge axis is well to the east of the AlCan border,
but ridging still holding as far north as the Alaska Range this
afternoon. The longwave trough will shift into more of a west to
east orientation over the next 24 hours, with troughing being the
more dominant feature across northern Alaska. This longwave trough
will send a shortwave north across the Interior to West Coast
through Saturday. Behind this shortwave, ridging will build across
the Interior with southerly flow as the strong closed low will
remain in the Bering Sea.

At the surface, a broad area of low pressure stretches across the
Bering Sea and into the Gulf of Alaska this afternoon. A surface
low centered over the Gulf of Alaska will move east to the
panhandle, while a weaker broad area of low pressure will persist
in the Bering Sea going into the weekend. A weather front will
move across the West Coast and into the Western Interior to the
foothills of the Brooks Range through tomorrow. This front will
cause enough lift when combined with a westerly moving front that
will develop north of the Alaska Range tomorrow, bringing
precipitation to the Central and Eastern Interior tomorrow night.
After this point, models have discrepancies regarding development
of fronts out in the Bering, but the overall theme remains the
same out west, which will be wet and cool. Conditions will dry
once again for the Interior through the weekend.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Dry and warm conditions continuing for today and tomorrow before
increasing clouds and chances for precipitation tomorrow night
from Fairbanks north as a weather front lifts to the north. After
this front, clearing and dry conditions will return with middle
50s to low 60s by the end of the weekend.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Low stratus and fog has returned across the Arctic Coast today, as
easterly flow continues through tomorrow. Areas north of the
Brooks Range will remain dry going into the weekend as high
pressure remains situated over Arctic waters. Temperatures will
remain above average today and then be near average going into the
weekend.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Cloudy and wet conditions will continue to be the story for areas
of the West Coast and Western Interior going into and through the
weekend. A complex of surface lows will remain out in the Bering
Sea, bringing a precipitation to the West Coast and to the
foothills of the western and central Brooks Range beginning
tonight and lasting into tomorrow night. Another front will push
into the Yukon Delta by Saturday morning, bringing a second round
of precipitation that will last into Sunday. Temperatures will
remain near or slightly below normal through the weekend.

Coastal Hazard Potential...
Southwest winds over Norton Sound today through Saturday will
produce elevated water levels 1 to 2 feet above the normal high
tide level along south and west facing coastlines beginning
Friday night and lasting through the weekend south of the Bering
Strait. Residents are encouraged to secure items by moving them
away from the beach.

.HYDROLOGY...
Rivers in the Kobuk and Noatak Valleys continue to rise or remain
high as heavy rainfall from earlier in the week continue to move
downstream. Expect these rivers to remain near bankfull and
continue to run high through the weekend.
