Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Warm and dry over most of the Central Interior to the east of
Tanana as well as the Eastern Interior. Continued wet along the
West Coast as well as the Western Interior and Western Brooks
Range. This pattern is expected to continue as the trough over the
Eastern Bering Sea deepens and the Ridge over Eastern Alaska and
the Yukon builds through Thursday. A strong low pressure will
push into the northern Gulf of Alaska on Friday and will bring a
chance of rain over the Eastern and Central Interior on Saturday.

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
A large arctic trough remains a dominant feature centered over
eastern Siberia and over the Central and Eastern Bering Sea.
Multiple shortwaves continue to moves through the long wave trough
over the Bering Sea onto the the West Coast and Western Interior
brining more rainshowers to the area. A secondary upper level low
will deepen over the Southern Bering Sea and push into the
Northwestern Gulf of Alaska on Thursday and will push into the
Northeastern Gulf of Alaska on Friday. As the upper level low in
the Northeastern Gulf of Alaska pushes north and east the upper
level ridge currently over Eastern Alaska and the Yukon will push
further east allowing moisture to flow northwest into the southern
portions of the Eastern and Central Interior Friday and into
Saturday. As the upper level low pushes east across the Northern
Gulf of Alaska upper level southerly winds will dominate to the
east of Tanana allowing warm and mostly dry conditions to prevail
over the Central and Eastern Interior on Thursday and into Friday.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Warm and partly/mostly cloudy conditions will continue as
southerly flow over the the AK Range continues to produce warming
and drying chinook flow, but will also bring extensive higher and
mid level clouds. Some sprinkles/showers periodically across the
Central Interior and Upper Koyukuk, otherwise dry elsewhere.
Expect more patchy morning valley fog near the ALCAN where skies
are clearer. Otherwise, warmer temps into the mid 60s will
continue today and Thursday but drop some on Friday as clouds and
chances for rain increase. Gusty gap winds are expected through
the Alaska Range Passes today through Friday.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Periods of rain will continue today as southwest flow continues
ahead of a low in the Northern Bering Sea moves north northwest
into the Gulf of Anadyr today. Rain will become more showery and
favoring higher terrain today as the surface low continues
northward and weakening over Siberia. Rain and showers taper off
tonight but showers/on off light rain will continue. Expect
another 0.25-0.5" overall, with some higher bullseye values over
0.5 in the Western Brooks Range. The next front shifts into the
YK Delta and SW AK on Thu night and Fri then lifts north along the
coast, bringing more rain.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A front continues to lift north into the Arctic pushing north of
the Arctic Coast bringing warming south winds across much of the
North Slope. Temps will remain warm today before east winds increase
and bring back cooler air off the arctic waters on Thursday. Showers
will favor the Western Arctic coast today and Thursday, otherwise
dry.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7... End of the week will begin warm as
a south flow aloft will dominate the Interior, with rain over the
West Coast. The pattern looks to persist through the weekend, with
more rain chances moving into the Interior as the ridging breaks
down and a series of fronts possibly move inland, which will allow
for gradually cooling temps from the warmer temps which much of
the Interior will see for the next several days.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.HYDROLOGY...
Rain across the Western Interior will cause rivers over the
Western Interior and West Coast to rise this week.

In the northwest Interior, heavy rain will diminish today, however
periods of light rain will continue for many areas into the
weekend, and combined with the heavy rainfall early in the week
will cause rivers and streams in the Noatak and Kobuk Basins to
rise sharply through Wed, with large rivers such as the Kobuk
remaining near bankfull and continuing to run high through the
week. This will also cause sharp rises on the Koyukuk River from
Allakaket downstream into Thursday. High water will remain in the
northwest Interior through the weekend.
