east along the coast tonight and Sat. A second low over the 
Chukotsk Peninsula will move east across the Chukchi Sea tonight

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A strong cold front moving into central Alaska this morning is
spreading rain and higher elevation snow across the region. This
front will continue pushing into eastern Alaska through the day
today. Multiple inches of snow expected at higher elevations of
the Brooks and Alaska Ranges, while snow will reach as low as 2000
feet for portions of the Interior today. Cold air and clearing
skies behind the front will bring the possibility of frost
Saturday morning to the Interior, including outlying areas around
Fairbanks.

.DISCUSSION...
The 27/00 UTC model suite initialized well with the main synoptic
scale features over northern Alaska and the Arctic and are in
general agreement into the weekend. A cold upper level low over
the high Arctic with a sharp trough extending southward into the
central Alaska will be the main feature impacting the forecast
area the next few days. This upper low will wobble around over the
Arctic Ocean as the trough gradually pushes east across the
state entering into Canada on late Saturday and early Sunday. A
secondary low will develop on the southern end of the trough over
the Gulf of Alaska today. These two features will continue to move
east reaching the Alcan border and southeast Alaska late Saturday
and early Sunday. Models are still in agreement with signs of a
long awaited pattern change on Sunday as a high pressure ridge
moves into the southern mainland of the state. There are still
some differences in the strength of the ridge, but at this time it
looks like early next week areas south of the Brooks Range will
see more seasonable temperatures and drier conditions.

Central and Eastern Interior...Rain continues over the central
interior this morning and will push east to the ALCAN border
this afternoon. A strong push of arctic air will accompany this
system and will settle into the area today and Saturday. Snow
levels will slowly fall today with several inches of snow expected
in the Brooks and Alaska Ranges at pass level, and a dusting of
snow in higher elevations across the Interior above 2000 feet. As
the precipitation exits the Interior Friday evening, clearing
skies will result in temperatures near or below freezing tonight.
Lingering clouds east of Fairbanks will likely keep temperatures
above freezing, with the coldest readings to the west. Gusty
northwest winds will develop this afternoon and continue into this
evening in the Upper Tanana Valley as high pressure builds in
over the Central Interior. A warming trend expected beginning on
Sunday and lasting into the beginning of next week.

North Slope and Brooks Range...The strong weather front that
pushed through the western and central North Slope will continue
to push east through the Eastern North Slope today. Primarily
rain, with snow mixing in at times is expected along the Arctic
Coast and lower elevations of the North Slope Plains. Primarily
snow expected in the Brooks Range above 1000 feet, with 2-4 inches
through this afternoon. Elevated surf of 1 to 2 feet above the
high tide line today and Friday along the Western and Northern
Arctic Coasts as the surface low moves across the Chukchi Sea
bringing northwest winds 15 to 30 mph. A second low will move
across the Chukchi Sea tonight and North Slope on Saturday
bringing another round of precipitation and wind.

West Coast and Western Interior...Cooler temperatures will settle
into the region as unseasonably cold Arctic air pushes south
going into the weekend. A second round of elevated surf of 2 to 3
feet above the high tide line will build today along the West
Coast, mainly north of the Bering Strait and in particular near
Red Dog Port and Kivalina due to southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph.
ahead of another weather system that will move into the west
coast tonight and Saturday with more rain and wind. Strong wind
headlines have been issued for all coastal zones north of the
Bering Strait, St Lawrence Island as well as zone 208.

Coastal Hazard Potential...A second round of elevated surf of 2 to 3
feet above the high tide line will build tonight and continue on
Saturday along the West Coast, mainly north of the Bering Strait
and in particular near Red Dog Port and Kivalina due to southwest
winds of 25 to 35 mph building this afternoon and continuing into
Saturday ahead of another weather system that will move into the
west coast tonight and Saturday with more rain and wind.

.FIRE WEATHER...
No fire weather issues. Drier and warmer conditions are expected
early next week especially over the southeast Interior.

.HYDROLOGY...
All rivers are below bankfull. Due to low freezing levels and
snow at higher elevations, the additional precipitation across
the forecast area the next couple days is not expected to result
in any issues.
