Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 152 PM AKDT Wed May 26 2021 .SYNOPSIS... Warm, pleasant weather is expected today across the West Coast, and much of the Interior. Afternoon showers and a few isolated thunderstorms will be possible across parts of the Eastern Interior. A cold front will begin tracking south from the Arctic this evening, initiating a sharp cooling trend from northeast to southwestern Alaska Thursday into Friday. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected as the front tracks south, particularly along the Alaska Range. Cold air behind the front will bring snow levels down, and a significant snowfall event is possible in the Alaska Range late Thursday into Saturday. && .DISCUSSION... Aloft 500 mb... The longwave pattern currently consists of broad troughing across the western and central Bering Sea, a high amplitude ridge across the Alaskan West Coast and Chukchi Sea, and another deep trough spanning the Beaufort Sea to the Alaskan Panhandle. The ridge, which has been the main driver of the warm, pleasant weather across much of the state, is currently weakening as a result of the intrusion of low pressure to either side. A height minima in the Beaufort Sea is expected to deliver the fatal blow as it tracks southwest into the Interior by Friday with 500mb heights as low as 5300m. This will effectively bisect the ridge, leaving a 5680m cutoff high in the Chukchi Sea. The low will begin to interact with the Bering Sea low over the Aleutians late in the weekend as a weak ridge begins to build into the southeastern Interior. North Slope and Brooks Range... A cold front sweeping south across the Beaufort Sea will move onshore this afternoon and progress south into the Brooks Range tonight. Snowfall amounts of generally 1 to 2 inches are expected along much of the Arctic coast east of Utqiagvik. Parts of the eastern Brooks Range, including the Dalton Highway could see 2 to 4 inches of accumulation with up to 8 inches in the higher elevations through Friday. Gusty north winds will persist behind the front through Saturday, supporting seasonably cool temperatures along the coast and below average temperatures in the Brooks Range. West Coast and Western Interior... More warmth and sun are expected today as ridging remains in control across the region. Temperatures may again approach near 80 degrees across the lower Yukon region today, with most other areas in the upper 60s to mid 70s. Winds will be generally northeasterly, so north facing areas of the coast will remain cooler. Northeast Winds will begin to increase Thursday as low pressure encroaches from the Beaufort Sea. Much cooler temperatures will follow the front south. Thursday's high temperatures are expected to be generally 5 to 10 degrees cooler, with Friday highs even cooler. However, skies will remain mostly clear across the region. Central and Eastern Interior... A line of showers is expected to track south through the Eastern Interior today along a weak front. Isolated thunderstorms are possible, but upper level cloud cover ahead of the front will likely keep high temperatures a few degrees cooler than initially expected, resulting in limited thunderstorm potential. The most likely area for any thunder this afternoon will be from Delta Junction east to Northway, where warmer temperatures and upslope forcing may help initiate convection. A more potent cold front will move south through the region Thursday, this time with more precipitation and colder air in tow. Isolated thunderstorms are possible along the front as it tracks south through the Interior. Significantly cooler temperatures are expected following frontal passage, with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s across the region Friday. Low temperatures Friday and Saturday morning will fall to the upper 20s to low 30s. In Fairbanks, temperatures in town could fall to near freezing, particularly Saturday morning. In addition to all this, rain will transition to mix of rain and snow Thursday night across the higher terrain of the Eastern Interior and Alaska Range. Snow levels will fall to around 1000 feet across much of the region Friday, leading to the potential for heavy snow accumulations in the Alaska Range, particularly east of the Richardson Highway. The highway itself could see about 3 to 6 inches of accumulation through Saturday, with up to a foot or more in the surrounding higher terrain. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued accordingly for this event. Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None. && .FIRE WEATHER... Another quiet day today with only some isolated thunderstorm activity possible from Delta Junction east to Northway. cold front will sweep south through the Interior Thursday spurring chances for isolated thunderstorms across much of the region. High temperatures in the 60s to low 70s today will fall into the upper 50s to mid 60s Thursday, then 50s Friday and Saturday. Relative Humidity values will be in the 20s and 30s through Thursday with fair overnight recovery, increasing following frontal passage. && .HYDROLOGY... A mix of rain and snow will produce around a half inch of liquid equivalent precipitation across Fortymile country and up to an inch or more of liquid equivalent in the eastern Alaska Range. Snow levels will gradually creep up to around 5000 feet by Monday, but no hydrological impacts are expected at this time. Breakup in the Arctic continues with no issues at this time.
