Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Heavy snow along with gusty winds and blowing snow are expected
over parts of the West Coast and Western Interior tonight into
early Monday as a weather system pushes north through the area.
Strong southerly gap winds are expected to develop on Sunday and
persist into Monday near passes in the Alaska Range. The Interior
will see a warmup in temperatures over the next few days after
record setting cold.

.DISCUSSION...
The 10/12 UTC models initialized well when compared to
observational data. The models are in decent agreement with
synoptic scale pattern out through the middle of the upcoming
week. For the grids, we nudged the winds from the Inherited
forecast to MOS guidance to bump up winds in valley areas. We also
nudged inherited winds over the ocean a bit to the Canadian model
to help bump the values up a bit.

Aloft, at 500 mb, a 508 dam low is currently in place over the
central Bering Sea, while a weak ridge stretches from the
Chukotsk Peninsula southeast into the Gulf of Alaska. The low will
slowly push to the east through Monday causing the ridge to build to
the north and east. The result of this will be southerly flow
developing over most of the forecast area by Sunday afternoon.
Southerly flow looks to remain in place over much of the forecast
area through the middle of the upcoming week, with a trough in
place over the Bering Sea.

Central and Eastern Interior...
A warming trend in temperatures is expected over the next few
days. Last night, many locations in the Interior saw low
temperatures in the 20s to 30s below zero (over 40 degrees below
climatological normals). With southerly flow kicking in, we
expect tonight to be much warmer than last night, especially over
the southern Interior, with lows in the single digits to teens
below zero. Closer to the Brooks Range, we will see some readings
that drop into the 20s below. Highs tomorrow in the southern
Interior will go above freezing in many locations, and will climb
into the 40s on Monday. Many spots in the southern Interior will
see lows Sunday and Monday nights in the 20s (above zero). Areas
north of the Yukon River will see some light snow Sunday night and
Monday, the snow could be heavy at times in the Koyukuk River
Valley. Strong southerly winds are expected to develop for Sunday
and Monday in the Alaska Range.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A weather front is currently bringing snow and blowing snow to
the Yukon Delta and the lower Yukon Valley. As the surface low in
the Bering Sea pushes to the east tonight and Sunday, snow, heavy
at times, will push north and east across the west Coast and
Western Interior. This will also be accompanied by gusty easterly
winds along the front as it moves north over the area. Snow
amounts of 6 to 12 inches through Monday morning. Some areas may
see lower amounts due to downsloping (especially on the north side
of terrain) or rain mixing in with the snow (this will be more
prevalent south of the Yukon River). The bulk of the snow will
taper off Sunday night and Monday; however with a trough over the
Bering, showers are possible at times through the middle of the
week.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Another night with temperatures in the 20s to 30s below is
expected for tonight. A warming trend in temperatures is expected
over the next few days, with temperatures close to normal for
Monday and above normal for Tuesday. Easterly winds will increase
along the coast early Monday as a front moves north over the area.
Areas west of Utqiagvik will see some snow on Monday as this
front moves across, with less than two inches of accumulation
expected. As the winds pick up, blowing snow will develop. Areas
from Wainwright west may see the visibility become poor at times.
Southerly gap winds will also develop early Monday in the Brooks
Range as the front moves to the north over the area. As the winds
pick up blowing snow will likely develop near passes in the Brooks
Range.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...Southerly flow over the Central
and Eastern Interior will bring seasonal temperatures with highs
in the 30s and 40s, and lows in the teens and 20s above.
