A 993 mb low will move to the Lower Yukon Delta this afternoon
then dissipate as it moves inland. A 964 mb low will move to the
Northern Bering Sea Sat night with the associated weather front
moving to St Lawrence Island Sun morning, and the West Coast Sun 
afternoon. The low will move N to Wrangel Island Sun night at 974
mb with the front moving inland and weakening Mon. A weak front
associated with the low will move to the Bering Strait Tue
morning.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A powerful front is moving ashore along the West Coast with
whiteout blizzard conditions occurring across many locations as
easterly winds have reached into the 50 to 60 mph range. Some
locations have even hit 70 mph across the Chukchi Coast. This
front will continue to move into the Western Interior then fall
apart as it moves east through tonight. Gusty south winds will
develop in the AK Range and Brooks Range Passes which will likely
result in areas of blowing and drifting snow through tomorrow
afternoon. Strong east winds over the North Slope will continue to
result in blizzard conditions over the Western Slope. Weather
will remain quieter over the Eastern Interior were high pressure
will hold.

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
There is a departing upper level trough over the Eastern Interior
with a shortwave ridge over the Western Interior. A powerful
storm force occluded warm front is moving into the West Coast,
bringing blizzard conditions and 60 MPH south to east winds. The
powerful trough driving this pattern is a 468 dam 500 hpa trough
over Eastern Siberia, which is unbelievably impressive in terms of
the depth of this trough.

West Coast and Western Interior...
The blizzard conditions along the West Coast are peaking now and
will abate by late this evening as winds quickly weaken as the
front shifts inland then falls apart. Conditions should rapidly
improve immediately behind the front as areas such as Saint
Lawrence Island went straight from blizzard to rapid improvement
already this afternoon. Inland snowfall will still be 2-4" before
this front stalls then weakens as it moves east. A weak front
will move into the West Coast tomorrow and bring periods of light
snow through Saturday morning. A stronger low/front will move in
on Sat afternoon and evening bringing more snow and some blowing
and drifting snow to Norton Sound and the Yukon Delta. Another
significant storm is already brewing on Sunday. Stay tuned...

Central and Eastern Interior...
Quiet weather as high pressure builds in. A developing southerly
gradient ahead of a West Coast front will bring southerly gap
winds to the AK Range, which will bring areas of blowing and
drifting snowfall. This will abate Fri afternoon as the weakened
front moves east, bringing light snow threats to the AK Range and
possibly into the FNSB Fri night through Sat. Otherwise, quiet
weather will be ongoing across much of the Interior.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Blizzard conditions have developed over the West Arctic Coast and
will continue through late this evening before the front shifts
offshore. Blowing snow will develop as far east as
Deadhorse/Nuiqsut but is not anticipated to be significant. Expect
blowing and drifting snow with gusty south winds across the
Brooks Range through Friday afternoon. Wind chills remain in the
-40 to -50F range but those will gradually rise as temps warm.
 Winds diminish completely tomorrow afternoon and really remain
 generally weak until another front moves in bringing more
 southeast winds Sat night and Sun.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7...
Another major storm will move into the West Coast starting as
early as Sat night but really ramping up Sunday and then moving
inland Monday into Tuesday as a significant surge of south flow
moves over the area. Expect more potential blizzard conditions
along the coast with possible heavy snow over the Western
Interior, and possibly shifting into the Eastern Interior Mon
night and Tue. Stay tuned...

...Strong weather front moving to the West Coast Sunday...

A strong weather front associated with a low moving north in
Siberia will move to the West Coast late Sunday bringing strong
winds, spreading heavy snow up the coast, and potential for
widespread Blizzard conditions.

The front will develop in the Bering Sea Saturday and move to the
coast Sunday as the low moves to Wrangel Island. Strong south
winds to 30 mph gusting to 50 mph will move to St Lawrence Island
early Sunday. The winds will spread to the West Coast by Sunday
evening and will be from the east and southeast at 20 to 35 mph
gusting to 50 mph locally.

Heavy snow will move to the Seward Peninsula, Norton Sound, and
the Lower Yukon Delta Sunday. The heaviest snow will be in the
Bendeleben Mountains on the Seward Peninsula, and the Nulato
Hills. Snowfall amounts vary in the model solutions at this time,
but range up to one foot in those areas. Most locations can expect
2 to 4 inches of snow Sunday night.
