Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Snow continuing across the West Coast and portions of the
Interior this afternoon. Snow expected to move into Fairbanks this
evening, bringing 3 to 6 inches to the Middle Tanana Valley with
similar amounts for the Central Interior and Upper Koyukuk Valley
through tomorrow. Other concerns include wind chills developing
across the North Slope along the Arctic Coast as very cold
temperatures and increasing winds persist going into the weekend.

.DISCUSSION...
The main feature in the upper levels that will drive the weather
for the short term is a strong closed low centered near St.
Matthew Island. South to southwest flow over portions of the
Interior is keeping snow from developing in areas north of the
Alaska Range this afternoon, with Fairbanks included. This upper
level feature will rotate northeast to Norton Sound this evening,
with flow becoming more westerly, meaning the downslope will
weaken. This trough will then move east and be centered over
Fairbanks by tomorrow night before exiting into Canada by Friday
morning. A trough currently over the North Slope will slowly
meander across Kotzebue Sound by Friday morning, but no impactful
weather is expected with this feature outside of persistent winds
across the North Slope that will cause wind chill issues. The
overall pattern will remain in a westerly regime going into the
weekend, ahead of another strong trough that will move from the
Bering Sea to the West Coast by Friday night.

At 850 mb, temperatures are looking to stay relatively stable
throughout the short term. From the Brooks Range north, -20C to
-25C temperatures will remain, while the Interior will see
temperatures ranging from -10C to -20C. As a result, temperatures
are expected to remain well below climatological normal along the
Arctic Coast while the Interior will be near or slightly below
normal going into the weekend.

At the surface, a weak low is moving into the West Coast this
afternoon. The front associated with this low is causing snow
across portions of the Interior. This low will move east this
evening, bringing snow further east into Fairbanks through
tomorrow. As this front advances east, the colder air filtering in
will result in snow lingering in the Interior into tomorrow night
before dissipating. The next feature of note will be a developing
surface low off the West Coast, bringing another round of snow to
the Yukon Delta region beginning Friday evening. Strong easterly
flow is expected to develop across the Interior with this event.
However, models are showing differences in location with
potential impacts, so stay tuned for further updates as this event
draws near.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Snow continuing for areas west of Fairbanks and Nenana, with snow
developing this evening for Fairbanks as the front advances east.
Generally 3 to 6 inches expected for this event through tomorrow
evening for areas including the Middle Tanana Valley, Central
Interior, and Upper Koyukuk Valley. Temperatures will remain in
the single digits to middle teens for highs as snowy and cloudy
conditions persist going into the weekend.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
East winds are expected to continue to increase across the Arctic
Coast tonight. Due to the well below normal temperatures and the
increasing winds, wind chill issues will become a problem. Wind
chill impacts are expected going into the weekend as winds
gusting anywhere from 30 to 45 mph and the cold temperatures
continue.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Snow continues this afternoon across portions of the West Coast
and Western Interior south of the Seward Peninsula. This snow is
expected to dissipate this evening as the surface low pressure
advances the front eastward. Wind chills will become a problem for
portions of the West Coast tonight and spread southward to St.
Lawrence Island later in the week. The next snow event is expected
to being Friday as a rapidly developing low will bring snow and
increasing east winds to the region. Temperatures trending down
going into the weekend, remaining well below climatological
normal.
