A 1018 mb low 80 NM north of Kaktovik will move to 80 NM north of
Nuiqsut by 3am Thu and then weaken. A 1041 mb high will move to 
400 NM N of Wrangel Island by 9pm Thu spreading high pressure east
across the Beaufort Sea. A strong low will move into the 
Southeast Bering Sea Thu, and into Bristol Bay on Fri.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A stormy, wet and warm southwesterly flow pattern continues over
Northern Alaska through Thu or Fri, followed by a change to a
colder and drier northwest flow pattern over the weekend. A series
of warm fronts moving northeast over the West Coast and Interior
today and Wed will bring 8-12 inches of snow areas from Nome to
Minchumina northeast up to the Brooks Range. Areas southwest of
Nome to Minchumina will have mixed precip, with 2-4 inches of
snow, freezing rain less than 0.10 inch, and periods of rain.
Freezing rain will be possible today over the southwest Interior
and West Coast south of the Bering Strait to Nenana.

Areas from the Bering Strait and Kotzebue north to Point Lay will
see near blizzard conditions this afternoon and tonight. The
Norton Sound Coast and Yukon Delta will see strong west winds and
snow squalls with brief blizzard conditions this afternoon
through tonight, with the winds spreading into the Western
Interior tonight, and into the Eastern Interior on Wed. On
Thursday most areas will have improving weather.

.DISCUSSION...
Upper Levels and Analysis...
A sharp trough will dig south across the Bering Tuesday and move
east into the Central Interior late Tuesday into Wednesday. A
trough of low pressure will drop down from the Arctic and slowly
settle over the state Thursday and Friday while ridging builds
over the Bering. This will allow colder air to filter down over
the eastern part of the state over the weekend.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A couple of fronts will impact the west coast. First will push
through Today with snow and blowing snow and areas of mixed
precip. Snow and blowing snow along the coast with near blizzard
conditions and heavy snow for the inland areas. Snow accumulations
around 6 to 12 inches with heavier amounts in the upper Kobuk and
Noatak valleys.

Central and Eastern Interior...
A weather front will move into the Interior this morning, with
snow amounts of around 4 inches are expected for the Fairbanks
area, with higher amounts up to 6 inches possible further south.
Snow will taper off briefly Tuesday afternoon, then a stronger
front will bring more snow to the Interior Tuesday evening into
Wednesday. Additional accumulations around 8 inches with higher
amounts northeast of Fairbanks. Snow will taper off to scattered
snow showers Thursday morning. Turning colder this weekend,
back well below zero into next week.
