Plain. High in the Beaufort Sea will build to 1035 mb as a tight
pressure gradient develops across the Arctic. The high will move N

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Temperatures across the Interior have substantially warmed
overnight and will continue to do so in the next coming days. The
first of 3 systems in the short term forecast period is along the
West Coast this morning and will weaken as it moves inland today.
A second system will track in the Bering impacting the West Coast
early Friday and then move inland. A third and much stronger
system will track across Russia with a front extending southeast
and it is expected to first reach the West Coast Saturday into
Sunday. Monday into Tuesday will be something to watch for the
Interior as a potential heavy snowfall event of several inches.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

Aloft...
Models in good agreement over the all around upper level pattern
through the weekend. A ridge of high pressure is shifting east and
building north over much of the state today, while longwave
troughing over the west. Behind the ridge, a shortwave trough will
follow and flatten the ridge to a more zonal flow pattern over the
state into Friday. Ridging then builds back in late Friday and is
followed by a much stronger shortwave trough that will track east
on Saturday. Behind that, yet again, ridging builds in from the
west. The dominant southwest to westerly flow over the state is a
favorable direction for moisture making it into the Interior.

Surface...
Models at the surface also in good agreement through at least
Saturday with little differences. Day three or Saturday into
Sunday is where disagreement begins. So there is still a lot of
uncertainty with the system that may bring heavy snowfall to the
Interior. The 00Z GFS was the easily defined outlier, however, the
16/06Z run has cut down on some of the bullish amounts. Still,
this is something to be monitored with each new model run.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Clouds and warmer air aloft has moved into the region overnight.
Expect temperatures to continue to increase into next week and
even some above zero readings. Chances for snow will begin to
increase today as moisture enters the Interior from the west.
Winds will also increase for higher terrain, the Tanana Valley
Jet, Eagle, and through the AK Range Passes, but should subside
into Friday. Besides the far southeastern part of the Interior
and shadowed out region of the Alaska Range, most places will see
up to 1 inch of snow with this first system. Another round of
snowfall is expected on Saturday where more than 1 inch is
possible.

West Coast and Western Interior...
The first storm along the coast this morning will be wrapping up
as it continues to weaken and snow tracks east. The next system
will arrive early Friday bringing more snow and winds to the West
Coast and Interior. Although this system won't be as strong
compared to the first due to its track and overall weaker
pressure. The third storm will arrive on Saturday and is forecast
to be the strongest of the three. Widespread blizzard conditions,
heavy snow with up to a foot or more for southern facing higher
terrain, southwest winds across the sea to create coastal impacts,
and with warmer temperatures, the possibility of mixed or
freezing precipitation.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Blowing snow and reduced visibilities along the coast this
morning due to strong easterly winds. Winds will begin to subside
later tonight. Strong southerly winds through the Brooks Range
passes will persist until the afternoon today and then pick back
up on Friday where gusts as high as 35 mph are possible. As
temperatures begin to increase, the cold wind chills felt by a lot

over the mainland, increasing chances for snow today through
Friday mostly west of Point Thompson.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
The third storm will bring southwest gales blowing across the
Bering Sea Saturday into Monday, and across the Chukchi Sea Sunday
into Monday. This will bring a chance of coastal flooding along
the West Coast and Western Arctic Coast Sunday into Monday. At
this time it looks similar to the flooding that occurred along the
West Coast a week and a half ago.

Extended Forecast Days 4 through 7...
Significant snowfall is possible across the Interior Sunday night
into Tuesday; however, there is still uncertainty with the
details of this system. Stay tuned as this system comes into
better focus in the coming days. And after this system, it appears
as though the West Coast will continue to remain active as
another front may enter the region next Wednesday.
